Is my turbo poorly ?

Featured Replies

My turbo is now really starting to annoy me . My car is a mk1 vrs 130 that has been mapped by shark

I bought the car about 3 months ago from some one on this forum . I never noticed the sound until a month down the line .

When I start the car there is no noise until I give it a little tap on the throttle so the turbo powers up when I then let it return to idle it sounds like a whinning noise with a little whistle in it. Also when putting my foot down when driving there is a strange whistling/whinning noise . Is this normal or does it sound As if the turbo has something wrong with it ? My car does not smoke at all so I guess there are no boost leaks although the car does seem to of lost some power although I can not put my thumb on it .

What would you do to diagnose the problem is there any test I can do ?

If the noise is when it's at idle then i doubt it's the turbo.

When it's idling after about 30secs/1min the turbo does start to whistle, don't know why but mine does and always has and it's fine.

It's not the turbo that whistles after a min or so it's sOme other gubbins in the engine bay. At idle the turbo isn't doing anything surely?

mine whistles on idle after 30sec has done for years dont think its owt to worry about

Don't think the turbo spools up when idling?

mine too whistles at idle, had the car a year and its done it since i got it. quite noticable especially in a garage where the sounds bounce off the wall. it goes if you blip the throttle and then returns once engine settles.

Mine also whistles shortly after starting the engine.

IIRC its EGR related.

Yes egr causes it Matt, deleted mine and no more jet like whine at idle
