Fountains Abbey and some macro bugs

Featured Replies

I went away last week and during the trip visited Fountains Abbey. I love it, it must have been so beautiful when it was still complete, and probably one of the biggest abbeys I've visited. It still is beautiful, and I feel it retains much of the majestic aura it would have had back then.

Here are a few of the photos I took there, it's worth a visit if you are round that way. such a shame what happened to these buildings.

I've also included some macro shots I got from the gardens at Beningbrough Hall. Nice place, but I think I prefer Fountains :) that abbey has become one of my favourite National Trust properties after Snowshill Manor! lol

Love your take on Fountains, works well in mono. I have a soft spot for the place, too. Were you using the 28mm Distagon? (I had a look at your Flikr pages) What body?

Vancouver etc brought back some memories - thanks!

Thanks :) it looks nice and moody like that, it was actually a beautiful sunny afternoon!

I used the Nikkor 10-24mm on my D300.

I can only use the Zeiss lenses on the Canon body I have (digitally anyway). I can get a Contax to Nikon mount, but it has to have glass in it to make the focus distance right, and I don't really want to put cheap glass between the lens and sensor, so I bought a new body just for those lenses lol, I have two film bodies for them too though.

Nice lens, obviously.

Still using film, too! Keep up the good work!

Fountains Abbey is my local NT property and a great favourite of mine too. Great shots!

Look out in October - on each Saturday they open until 10pm and have the whole place floodlit. There are choral concerts in the cellarium and a hog roast over by the tea room. You can get some great shots but you have to time it well as the place is teeming!

Even without the photography there is a great atmosphere and (if the weather is ok!!) it is a lovely way to spend the evening. SWMBO and I usually arrive late afternoon, take a walk around the adjoining deer park and water gardens, then go down to the abbey as it gets dark. Grab a hot pork sandwich :p and a pot of tea then spend the rest of the evening getting the greasy finger marks off my camera...

Usual entry fees and free entry for NT members.

End of plug

Amazing! I would love to do that. I saw photos of it lit and also saw the massive floodlights and we commented how nice it would be in the dark! Might have to make the effort and try to get to one of those. I'm an NT member, so yep, freebie! :)

And hog roast?! ace! I love it!

Just checked the events calendar to be sure I remembered it right!

Not much detail yet but this year it is all 4 Saturdays in October - 6, 13, 20, 27. Open until 10pm with last admission at 9pm. Head for the hog roast early! It is popular.

Fab, I'll have to try and get over there one weekend. Would need a hotel though as its 2 hours away from me :(

Why is that? Does your Furby turn back into a pumpkin after midnight :giggle:

No worries Cinders - plenty of B&B's around there.

Teehee, no it doesn't, but I'm getting old and I can't cope with these late nights haha! Might be ok as it's a Saturday I suppose... have to see!

Fab set of photos Loz - love the Fountains Abbey ones.

Total novice at photography but have captured a few of some of our local historical buildings - NT and English Heritage. Will hunt some out and post up - would l value some pointers and advice.

Clarity on the Bugs photos is awesome - well impressed

Thanks Sarah. You might be interested in the national trust group on flickr. You can add your photos and view others people's. It's fun trying to recognise the locations!

Cheers Loz - will have a look.

Have been around quite a few sites, but loads still to do !!!
