Sat Nav aerial place/type

Featured Replies

basically wanting to know what to people normally put the gps aerial for their sat nav to get the best signal i dont really want to put it on the dash im thinking maybe on the windscreen like top left corner

and what type do people have as i have a little square one is there a better type?

What type of aerial are we talking? Every stand alone sat nav I have had has an inbuilt aerial that works fine when the sat nav is mounted as usual on the windscreen. Some have the option to connect to an external antenna if there is problems with reception. Usually if you have a Ford with one of those fancy front demister things, or a metallic tint.

If it's for a double din head unit type thing I'd just put some strong double sided mounting tape under it and stick it somewhere under the dashboard at the top, away from the airbag.

ah very sorry forgot to say its a the proper skoda one but was fitted by me so it dont have the aerial built into the normal fm aerial.

You could try a GPS aerial that doubles as a tax disc holder!

Just leaves a short wire visible between the holder and the top of the dash trim.

Several manufacturers make them. Search eBay to start with - then find a decent one on the net.

that sounds a really good idea! had a look at them and me being the fussy g*t i am i dont like the look of them :(

you could get an oem vw sharkfin with a gps connector and then run the wire through the headlining from sharkfin to headunit, i believe the part no is :

1K0 035 507 K ... cannot imagine one of them being cheap unless you can drop on a second hand unit in good condition

The above option is expensive though, an OEM sharkfin aerial with GPS will set you back close to £100.

Best bet is to buy a hidden gps aerial from eBay with the same connection as the one you have on your unit, then just run it up the A pillar and into the headlining.

I'm struggling with a similar dilemma; I have an OEM setup but the aerial is ugly so want to change to a sharkfin. But have found that its cheaper to go sharkfin for radio, and hidden for gps.

if it was me doing it to my car id have a good search for a sharkfin on the internet ebay , gumtree etc. ring local scrappers and try and get a second hand one, alot of new vw's and audis have gps sharks fins so im sure one will be compatible

They are compatible, but as I said they're expensive.

The best bet is to get an inexpensive standard shark fin, and a hidden GPS one. Same result, just split over two aerials, and much much cheaper.

thanks everyone for your input! would have loved to have a sharkfin if it wasn't for the fact as said they can cost a fortune and also im just so damn lazy to be running the wire for it! haha

as said i already have the little square one so i decided to have a play around with where it was, it was already just slotted up in the roof lining out of the way when it was not getting good signal so started playing with it and moved it right to the n/s/f of the roof just in front of the grab handle so still not seen and bam! it works! and pretty well too been on a couple of drives and still working so i will keep it like this for now and see how it goes

once again thanks for your input! :)

there is one on ebay at £55.00 would be worth an offer of £40. would look the part and keep everything oem:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-SKODA-SEAT-AUDI-Shark-FIN-Aerial-Black-Webasto-GPS-GSM-new-genuine-/280831183771?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item4162d7cb9b#ht_483wt_731

failing that there are many different pattern sharkfin aerials on ebay to fit just about every vw golfs polos etc as long as you know what connector you need

I try and make an offer to that guy all the time. Doesn't take less than £50 for them. Plus you have to find an adaptor to adapt the old style GPS to the new blue one, if you find one let me know!!

I just shove mine up behind the glove box.
