decatted , egr deleted remapped... is it meant to have clouds of soot?

Featured Replies

Hi all

Like my title reads. Have had my car decatted egr deleted and have had it mapped..

When I put my foot down and it goes into boost it dumps a lot of soot out the rear.. so much so you can't see out of rear window. Is it illegal like this??

yes , who did it, if excessive smoke it is unburnt diesel

When driving normal it is ok. When you put foot down it dumps it all out.. it is something to do with the egr delete as remap and decat produced little smoke. Egr was done recent with new pipes fitted to stop boost leaks

The eml comes on also so I assume it needs a new remap to code off the egr.. would this solve the excessive soot issue?

Your always going to get smoke, as individually they all cause more smoke, mines is decatted and it smokes when i boot it!

Yeah I knew that but not to the extent you can't see through your back window when its happening lol can't imagine the person behind will be best pleased ;-) especially if its the police

Think its because I had it remapped last year before all this work on it.. might be time for a new remap :)

Well have a think about it...

The egr valve recirculates exhaust gasses to make them cleaner, improve fuel econemy and to give out less black smoke.

The cat is designed to filter exhaust gasses to make them cleaner before they exit the exhaust.

The remap, more fuel, more power, adjust the timing, take it out of econemy mode that skoda will have it in.

So overall, they all add up to a nice dirty cloud maker.

Does it smoke throughout the rev range or just low down?

EGR isn't activated at WOT. So can't see that effecting it but it'll be interesting if it has. Can you refit it to see what hapoens?

EGR is used to reduce combustion temperature reducing NOx emissions. But like I say it's not used at WOT.

Who mapped it for a start?

If it was someone who doesn't really know what they're doing, and simply turned everything upto 11, hardly surprising you're getting massive clouds of black smoke.

Yeah sounds like lazy mapping. Up the torque limiter by x % and messed with the smoke map I bet.

The egr was in such a poor state the pipe underneath was cracked and puffs of smoke were going into the bay on startup so I am glad I blanked it off and the egr was really coked and in no fit state to go back on so good job I wanted to remove it.. its an AMD remap , been on the car for for a few years , before all this work

Again I am not stupid I knew it would smoke just thought there would be less as it seems extreme and I think the police may pull me over lol

Only does it when you put your foot down for a few seconds . It is completely fine on normal acceleration.. but I know on mots they stick something up the exhaust connected to the machine and put there foot down on the accelerator.. would this fail a smoke test? :-)

try some injector cleaner in with your diesel, and boot **** out of it and see if that helps

Ok :) something like Miller's or redex???

I can't see it being the EGR that has caused the smoke. Like I say it's not used at WOT so really no change.

You connected every up up? No detached or damaged vacuum hoses? Do you have access to vcds to carry out some logs?

If theirs no faults then you need to get your remap altered. It's injecting too much fuel.

It possibly wouldn't fail.

Try it yourself at idle. As they don't test the engine under load it will probably be ok.

Also bear in mind that the design of the exhaust on the vRS means all the smoke it blasted straight out the back. Most other diesels, mine included, have the tailpipes pointing down at the tarmac. I get a poof of smoke when the boost first comes on but most of it gets blasted onto the road surface.

What engine do you have BTW? ASZ or BLT?

Depending what engine you have you can have the EGR mapped out. If it's ASZ you shouldn't really remove the EGR as it houses the anti shudder valve and so removing the EGR also removed the anti shudder valve.

I think its the asz .. might get a fresh remap with the egr mapped out

The two vacuum pipes that would have gone into the egr have been blanked off aswell

*** update ***

Just needed flushing out from when the coke filled egr was on :)). It smokes but that's understandable with the decat remap and egr delete.. phew

How do you know which engine you have (ASZ/BLT)?

A few ways to tell:

  • VIN number should either have ASZ or BLT in it somewhere.
  • Sticker under the boot carpet should say.
  • Look at the engine and if the EGR has 2 vacuum connections on and a second little actuator then it's ASZ.
  • Most engines after 2004 ish are BLT in order to meet the new emissions standards that came in.
  • Read the engine ECU and it should tell you in the info.

Phil

You had it mapped then you done the mods after. Might be worth having it adjusted again.

Yeah the maps a good two to three years old.. might give AMD a call soon :-)
