Help! Previous Octy Manual now, or wait for a nearly new Octy with DSG?

Featured Replies

I'm after another Octy but which one,

I'm nearly convinced myself to get a 1-3 yr old L&K TDi manual, for around

I've only test driven the Octy but have ordered one with DSG. I tested the 1.9 Manual and 2.0 DSG. The DSG seemed a perfect match for the diesel engine and the gear changes were almost imperceptible, even smoother than a conventional autobox. I currently live in the land of autos (USA) where they are mated to big idle engines and smoothnes is all - but - the DSG was even better than my current Buick

If you like autos then wait for the DSG, all the advantages of manual (fuel consumption is damn near identical in real life) with the ease of automatic and in traffic not having a clutch pedal to keep pushing is a lot more restful.

Thanks, friend of mine ordered a new A4 2.0TDI Avant, tried to explain to him the errors of his ways, and get the Octy Estate w DSG instead but style overcame reality.....

I know what you mean! I left UK in 1992 when Skoda's were a cheap joke and now returning after 12 years it was "difficult" to put my prejudices to one side and buy a Skoda. However, unless you are blinded by badge snobbery - or fearful of your masculinity (probably the biggest reason men don't buy Skoda's but prefer BMW's) - the evidence is overwhelmingly in favour of Skoda as the star of the VW/Audi family.

I went about my choice in a clinical method and researched the Mercedes C Class Estate as well as BMW's and Audi's and VW's. In the final analysis it was impossible to discount the Skoda. The reliability and customer satisfaction of Mercedes is poor, BMW's are too associated with boy racers, Audis have questions about ride and do not approach Skoda brand for reliability. I must admit I was tempted to wait for the new Passat but the estate won't be available until end of the year and I am always suspicious about buying a car in its first few months of manufacture.

So I have ordered an L&K Octy Estate 2.0 Tdi DRG. to be delivered when I return to the UK later this year.

If you do wait for DSG I would be interested in the real world mpg figures. Skoda's official figures suggest the DSG does use more fuel.

Dont really see how though as the DSG shouldn't introduce any more losses into the transmission.

in my cause it is true, the city mpg figures are higher than manual - i had 2.0 tdi elegance and now the same engine with DSG, on average one can say that the city consumption is higher (but I can give you European figures here) 7-8 per 100 and now 10-11 per 100 outside the city the consumption is nearly the same, so the combine use is on average higher

The DSG gearbox, I think weighs about 40-50kg more than the manual, and must require more energy to operate. Pressing the clutch pedal for you, and engaging the next gear sometimes but guessing wrong, so it is changing gear more often than a manual change???

Anyways it can't be anywhere near as inefficent as an auto g/box.

Prob a daft question, but is dsg available on the 1.9tdi 4x4 estate? If so, at what cost?

I know it's not an exact comparison, but I went from a 1.9TDI (130BHP) Superb manual to the Octavia 2.0TDI DSG. My journey to and from work is made up of a mixture of A roads, Motorway, country lanes and traffic jams. Now that the 2.0TDI engine has a few miles under its belt I'm seeing consumption roughly identical to my old Superb. When I got to work this morning, the average consumption on the trip computer was showing as 53.8MPG, so even allowing for the inaccuracy of the computer, I think that's still pretty good :D

Don't think so. But VW ran an ad.campaign for the DSG box some months ago and there was a ref to 4WD and a related footnote that said (I think) late 2005 availability. Now a 2.0 TDI 4x4 with DSG would interest me.........
