Tuning Boxes - Are they the same?

Featured Replies

As the above really.

Have found a site ( http://www.tdi-tuning.co.uk/car_and_van_diesel_tuning_boxes/skoda/fabia/19_tdi_vrs_128_bhp__130_ps__96_kw/pd_diesel_tuning_box_skoda_fabia_19_tdi_vrs_128_bhp_130_ps_96_kw_P2495.html ) which sells tuning boxes for the fabia vrs, with a increase of BHP upto "163bhp" Although I know this probably wont be true.

So are these cheaper tuning boxes the same as the fleabay 20p resistor jobbies?

Their site seems to have good reviews, but again I wouldnt be suprised if these were fake.

Cheers

No these are not the same as the ebay resistor boxes.

These are digital units that basically alter the signal that the ECU sends to the injectors.

They don't just trick the car into thinking it is colder than it actually is.

My dad one of these on his VW Sharan TDI 110 and has had some really positive results from it so far.

Think they have and ebay site and they are a bit cheaper btw.

Great stuff. Have sent them an email asking how the box actually works, as I can't find anything on their site.

If all turns out to be good I may invest in one.

Suppose you don't get any fault codes or CEL?

Cheers

Friend of mine put a DTUK tuning box ( fitted by me ) on his Insignia 2.0 tdci sri, thing goes like a rocket now, eay to install to, and easy to remove!. Great customer service and back up. The box even works with his DPF

I do like the sound of the DTUK tuning boxes, but their abit expensive.

For an extra £150 I can have a shark remap with a sts module.

Which is why I'm looking at the one stated in my first post.

Don't get me wrong though, I would like a DTUK box, and if a second hand one came up, I'd snatch it up straight away!

I recieved an email from tdi-tuning at 18.41 last night. Good customer service, or is someone unfortunate enough not to work 9-5 :p

Here is what I recieved after asking how the box actually works;

"Thanks for your mail. We stock a system to suit your Fabia VRS (QR2495). Our exclusive PD system will increase your power output to 163 Bhp whilst increasing your Torque and Improving your Fuel Efficiency. Your system will be pre-programmed to ensure that your vehicle runs at optimal performance whilst ensuring that your engine control devices are still in full control. The system connects to the fuel temperature and viscosity sensor but it keeps the original sensor in the loop and simply modifies the data the sensor sends our tuning box. This means the engine will never over fuel constantly like some cheaper systems do.

This system can be viewed on our website by clicking the following link:

http://www.tdi-tuning.co.uk/car_and_van_diesel_tuning_boxes/skoda/fabia/19_tdi_vrs_128_bhp__130_ps__96_kw/pd_diesel_tuning_box_skoda_fabia_19_tdi_vrs_128_bhp_130_ps_96_kw_P2495.html

Our PD system can be removed without trace and is completely undetectable when removed. Installation is extremely easy and will not take you any longer than 5 minutes to complete. All of our products come with full easy to follow pictorial English installation instructions, a full 14 Day Money Back Guarantee and a 3 Year Warranty."

Isn't this the same as the £20 ebay resistor specials then?

And as I have a BLT engine, which are known for making more than 130bhp, is there any point using this box, if it only delivers 10-20 more bhp?

Cheers

No it's not.

The ebay specials literally are just a resistor inside a box. They increase the resistance across the temperature sensor and tricks the engine into thinking that the engine is cooler and so it injects more fuel.

I think his explaination isn't the best tbh.

It actually plugs into the injector wiring loom and basically all the signals going to the injectors from the ECU and vice versa go through the box. The box has a proper circuit and microcontroller inside that basically modifies the signals going to the injectors and when the ECU requests a certain ammount of fuel the box actually tells the injectors to give more and for longer.

As far as the car's ECU is concerned everything is just the same as the box doesn't trick the ECU and give it a false temeperature reading etc.

Obviously it's no match for a full remap as all it is doing is injecting more fuel and nothing else is monitored.

They offer good bang per buck if you can get them at a decent price. As I said before search on ebay and they sell them for £74.99 with free delivery with the same 3 year warranty and 14 day money back guarantee.

Thanks philje123, that makes more sense now.

Thanks for the ebay link to, had a search last night and couldnt find anything. Didn't have much luck with ebay last night, ordered some LEDs and other bits and bobs for the fabia, purchased it all for a little project I have in mind, then boom. Memory kicked in a little too late, so all of the parts are going to my old house! :wall:

Did spot a DTUK box for a fabia though ..... desicions!

My bro in law and best mate had one of these fitted to 1series BMW, and an octy mk2 Vrs, they took them off due to conflicting info regarding the EGR valve (Emmissions Gas Regulator).

My friends computer threw up a management light recently, he took the box off, and got it diagnosed, and it said that the EGR was stuck open or shut(can't remember which now).

I have a dragon performance one on my car. The boxes basically work off of your ecu. As i did some research when I was looking. The chips in the tuning box are preprogrammed they take the reading that the ecu sends to the injectors applies its own map if you like to this reading and then sends it on to the injectors.

Long story short you car tells injectors to squirt fuel at one pressure tuning box increases this pressure according to its preprogrammed map.

Quite effective but has flat spots in rev range.

This one looks like it plugs in the fuel temp sensor (like he mentions in the email) the other types plus into the loom going to the injectors I believe.

If its the fuel temp version then it sends an incorrect signal back to the ecu. In the ecu is a map based on fuel temp. As the temp increases then the ecu has to compensate by increasing the injection duration. So by altering the injection can increase fuel.

The other version intercepts the signals going to the injectors increasing the injection duration.

All the boxes I've seen only increase fueling across the whole rev range. A remap you can have it altered at set points. So say 5% at 1750rpm, 20% at 3500rpm.

If done correctly the ecu still knows how much it's injecting. So when the ecu request 50mg it gets 50mg and also the timing for 50mg. Instead of asking for 50mg but gets 70mg of fuel and 60mg timing (timing maps only go to 60mg in a stock file).

Also with a remap you can alter the turbo related maps unlike a box. With a box the turbo pressure is increased due the increase in fuel. With a remap you have control of the N75 map which controls the VNT.

So overall you might not get more power with a remap but if it's done properly then it's not a bodged job :)

That was copy and pasted from another thread about tuning boxes.

How is your map? Still fine tuning it?

Remaps running great thanks :) Still not found time to get it on a rolling road though :(

So sorry, just saw your reply! It was a Pro Bitz box I think it's called!

I use to have the same device on my car years back. Mine was from DMS Automotive. Its a great peice of hardware. As for the map, well thats down the the person who wrote the file.

As far as I know AMD use a Revo system, it's pretty good so I hear? They used it on the Bonneville Octavia VRs!

One-click was originally made by Milford Microsystems and it was called pocket power 100. Like alientech powergate it gets renamed by whoever buys it.
