1.9 TDI VRS 2006 - Cold Start Problems (Car, Not Weather).

Featured Replies

Hi,

Been having these problems for a while now, and i've had enough!! Need some advise to what could be causing it.

After leaving the car standing over night, it really struggles to start in the morning, regardless to the weather. It might start first time then dies, and then really struggles to start, keeps cranking and just about catchs ann starts,

But once its been started, it starts fine all day long..

Also I think my MPG is poor.

No fault codes on VCDS.

Bump

Sounds similar to mine.

I was initially getting a flashing glow plug light and an EML light on the dash but the car drove fine after fighting with it to start.

I had an error for the following:

Cam Sensor

Crank Sensor

We cleared the codes and the crank sensor cleared.

Drove the car for a few days the lights came back and it was the Cam Sensor again

Replaced that and the lights have stayed off but its still a bitch to start.

We checked the plugs and discovered they were ok.

After alot of tinkering on Friday we have discovered a lot of play in the fly wheel by putting the car into 4th gear and rolling it back and forth.

There is a peep hole in the bell housing that should have a bung on it, but mine doesn't, this allowed us to see the right hand side [as you look at it] facing nearest the passenger wheel move with the car but the toothed part of the fly wheel taking a significant time to engage and turn.

We have deduced because of this play I require a new flywheel as when the engine turns its not engaging the flywheel correctly and failing to start. So I ordered one from ECPs the other day and i'm having it fitted next week.

Hopefully this cures the problem :) If it doesn't, i'll be cross.

I cant see it being the flywheel for some reason, also mine had been changed recently

also I have no fault codes

try your glow plugs then mate. mine took ages, fitted solid flywheel, jumps to life now

also I have no fault codes

Perhaps in my long winded post i didnt come across 100% clear. I had none after the inital fault finding.

If its been replaced recently then you should have nothing to worry about.

As said above check your plugs :)

dmf's are mad things eh? Mine was going around 45 degrees or something daft, must have been providing resistance and catching just as engine wanted to fire, putting it off balance

Think thats exactly what mines doing i've noticed that when it does fire up it locks the doors straight away rather than over 5mph!

sounds a bit "panic room" to me. Does it make any threats aswell?

Worth checking your battery too - I've had similar issues that were resolved when the 6-year old battery was replaced this year.

again good suggestion
