Front Strut Information

Featured Replies

Hi,

the F/N/S coil sprink broke on my Fabia 1.9sdi Hatchback year 2000 yesterday. I hope to do it myself, and need a few answers please?.

Anybody got a good one to sell please?

1.What other spring fits ( fabia range,VW,seat etc)?

2.What other Strut fits ( fabia range,VW,seat etc)?

3. Can strut be removed without removing drive shaft nut?(reason new nut only just been fitted)

4. Can drive shaft be uncoupled ,and whole hub be lowered to get enough room?

5.Any others help or tips please?

6. Are the springs 'handed'?

thanks

You should be able to get a replacement spring from your local motor factors.

If you've got spring compressors its a relatively simple DIY job. If not either get some if your confident enough to do it or leave it to a local garage should be done in under an hour.

At home it's remove wheel and put car on axle stand undo 3 top mount bolts. Then disconnect drop link ( I recommend wire bricking end of threads before trying to undo and perhaps a spot of penetrating oil on it for a bit aswell.

Then undo bolts holding strut to hub.

Support hub so that driveshaft doesn't pop out of gearbox. Pull strut out.

Compress spring remove top mount remove spring. Compress new spring and refit it all in reverse order

Hi,

thanks for info, sorry for delay, but I was having problems with my login! .I had to email Briskoda ,and I have just got it sorted!!

Do you have to have a spring compressor, before you pull the strut from the car?. I havent got one. Also looking my strut locking bolt is not a splined bolt, just a normal nut and bolt on both sides, which will be easier to remove? I take it you dont have to undo the 12 sided drive shaft nut at all.I hope so because I had them replaced new type to old type not long ago,and you need a large metric socket.

thanks

You do need spring compressors otherwise you will never get the spring off the strut or back on again. You don't need to touch the driveshaft nut at all. Yep struts should be held on with two normal nut and bolts.

If you don't own spring compressors I'd leave it to a garage as for the price of them for a little more the job will be done for you. And will be done quicker than you can do it at home so not really worth getting dirty for in my eyes
