Engine Shutting off / stalling randomly + engine light

Featured Replies

Hello everyone,

Yesterday on my way home from work my car randomly cut out while driving at about 25mph. The engine light come on and the car wouldnt start again until i left it for 5 mins or so. Then it happend again about 5 mins later and again about 5 mins after that.

Any ideas? I drive an 54 plate fabia vrs.

Everything ive read leads me to beleive its a DPF but does the fabia even have a DPF? Also ive noticed the exhaust has gotten more sooty recently.

Thanks for any help!

Carl

Edit:

right, after diagnostics it has come out with 5 fault codes :S

17932 - FUEL PUMP RELAY INTERMITTENT

17849 - EXHAUST GAS RE CIRCULAION VALVE INTERMITTENT

19561 - INTAKE MANIFOLD FLAP CHANGE OVER VALVE

18027 - GLOW PLUG RELAY INTERMITTENT

17957 - CHARGE PRESSURE CONTROL SOLENOID VALVE 2

Any ideas? :(

Cheers,

Carl

The PD130 doesn't have a DPF.

sounds like its over heating, do you have coolant in it?

When you crank the engine and it doesn't start, does the rev counter show the cranking speed or sit at zero?

I’m not sure I’ll have to check on the cranking speed.

What does this mean if it does / doesn't?

It has plenty of coolant and the temperature is fine.

My uncle who is a mechanic is bringing his fault reader thing round so hopefully I’ll know tonight!

I hope it’s not too bad!!

Thanks for your replies everyone

The engine speed sensor can become very sensitive to temperature. The rev counter gets it's feed from this sensor, so if it is faulty, then the rev counter will sit at at zero when it should show the cranking speed.

I'm hoping its just one thing that has knocked the others out of sync??

But right now the car wont stay ticking over for longer than about 10 seconds.

My guess is that the DI system relay is faulty. The relay is plugged into position 15 of the relay plate behind the dash above the pedals.

Sorry for my naivety mate..

Is this a pricy fix? Or easy to change? As it stays running just about long enough to get off the drive im going to struggle getting it to a garage atm.

I really appreciate your help! bear with me lol.

It's also known as relay 109 and costs about £15. The relay is in position 15 of the relay plate and if it is the original part it will have '109' printed on it. Pull the old one and plug the new one in.

The part number is either 6Y0906381 or 6Y0906381A depending on the chassis number.

There's no guarantee that replacing the relay will fix the problem, but all the items in your fault list are reliant on this relay and it is a common fault.

Brilliant! Thanks mate its worth a go for £15.

How do i get to the relay plate?

I had a garage anaylise the codes.

And they say that its the Fuel Pump Relay. or the Main relay (because sometimes there combined with the fuel pump relay?).

So ive still got the DI relay anyway so il plug that in and give it a go as well as the Fuel Pump relay.

Am i right in thinking that the Relay Panel is below the fuses on the drivers side?

I miss my car!! haha

Cheers,

Carl
