changing SPI head to MPI head

Featured Replies

Is it possible to change the SPI head from a favorit 1.3 8v to the MPI head from a felicia 1.3 8v?

Is it a direct sway?

Will I need to replace the fuel pump?

And is it possible mod the inlet to accept individual TB/plenums?

Also can I uprate the injectors?

Any help is much appreciated

Kris

It's a direct swap. You will, of course, need to adjust the valve clearances once you fit the head due to tolerances etc., but it's a straight swap. It was a common mod on the 'challenge' Felicias, although it doesn't provide the increase in flow/power that many said it did - it was the whole lot (manifold, ECU) which did.

You won't need to change the fuel pump if you're keeping the SPI injection system.

If you want to change everything over to the MPI (i.e. inlet, injectors, etc) then you will need to change fuel pump, the system pressure is different, apparently. Not sure how that would work on a Favorit - I don't know if you can put the Felicia MPi in-tank pump in the tank on a Fav or not, or if you can fit the entire tank from one. Jim may well know, though.

You can change the inlet to whatever you want, of course! There are lots of options you could go with.

You can uprate the injectors, but there's no point unless you have tuned the engine elsewhere (and therefore need more fuel). You would also need a programmable ECU to make such injectors work properly - no good just putting in a certain % more fuel everywhere as it's unlikely that the mods you make will mean that is what is needed.

Thank you very much for the fantastic reply :)

I am looking at replacing the entire head on my fav with the felly MPI one (MPI injectors, inlet exhaust the lot)

So it should be a direct fit?

What kind of problems will I have with intergrating the MPI head into the existing loom and ECU or will I have to replace the ECU with the felly MPI ECU?

Kris

You would need to MPI ECU too.

Everything will be a direct swap as the engine block etc is the same. The only difference with them is the way the fuel is injected. The SPI also has a distributor and the MPI doesn't. Can't think how this is blanked off on the MPI.

You can't just blank the distributor off - the distributor drive has a slot in the bottom of it, and that slot drives the oil pump. You'll need the blanking drive from the MPi engine (fits into the same hole). It's easy enough to fit, you just have to align the drive properly to the slot, which can take a couple of goes to get it to engage - as you push it down, it rotates, so you need to take that into account when you set the position so it's in the right place when you meet the oil pump drive. Not too hard but usually a "third time lucky" job.

As Phil said, you'll need to connect the MPI ecu, loom, etc. There are some differences between the two, but I can't remember offhand. I think 10 minutes sat down with both wiring diagrams will sort it out, as the MPi loom on a Felicia connects to the main loom with an (I think) 6-way connector, with the usual suspects such as supply, earth, fuel pump relay output, rev counter output, and also the connection to the immobiliser. As such to get an MPi working in a Fav you'd also need to transfer the appropriate immo box from a donor car, along with a transducer from a key, and the wiring for this and the sensor. Not too difficult, but if you're getting bits from a donor you'll want to get them all from one source. The immo box communicates with the ECU, so you'll need to replicate that connection plus supply to it, and there's no easy way round it.

However, the physical fitment of it is direct, a straight bolt-on fit.

I run the blanking plate on my race engine and it is definitely needed......it has a long 'stalk' on it with the necessary cog on the end.

The major downside of the MPI is the valve spring design....its ridiculous beehive design and not capable of sustained high revs. I broke one on an engine that had a limiter set at 6000rpm. SPI double spring set up can't be fitted to MPI head - it needs extra work.

In all honesty you would be better doing a bit of porting to your current head with a dremel (or similar) and then adding the inlet etc.

hi there you mite need to change the dash loom on your fav as the immoliser on a felicia is in the loom you can by pass this buy having the imobliser removed from the ecu you can even fit the top half off a felicia dash to the fav one i did do a 1.3spi felicia to a 1.6mpi and had no problems with the fuel pump the mpi loom has the four wires for temp sender and coil pack wires if i remember rightly to the spi one you do need the blanking plate from the mpi to
