KKK Turbo - On its way out, or something simple?

Featured Replies

Right, that age old question of the KKK turbo!

I'm not sure if its on its way out or not, but here are my symptoms:

Whistles at any rpm when i put my foot down, then quietens down. eg, if im cruising at 40mph, then put foot down, i get a whistle (i presume as turbo spins up to speed) then it quietens down, i presume once up to required turbo rpm.

Also, when lifting off the throttle, as im pulling up to my drive for instance. there is a muted whistle (no where like the whistle when spooling up) which is aparent as the engine itself is quiet when lifted off slowing to a stop.

Another thing to note is that is i put foot down, it whistles slightly as described above, then if i lift off at full boost i get a slight 'tschh' not dump valve loud, but noticable, is this just the standard waste gate/recirculator??

Power is strong still in gear, and i dont get any abnormal smoke. Get a slight puff on startup, but nothing on idle and minimal when at full throttle in high rpm (3k plus)

The car is standard apart from an R-Tech remap. Standard KKK turbo. Normal service 5k ago. 58k miles. 56 plate. BLT engine code.

Ive checked the boost pipes between ihntercooler to EGR. But not from turbo to intercooler yet as ill need to get it up on the jack and undertray off.

What do you guys think?

Any extra smoke? does sound like slight boost leak.

Nothing significant, nothing on normal driving, and a bit on full throttle, not clouds of it by any means!

It does slightly whistle at idle sometimes, but ive read they do this (even though the turbo isnt spinning up then??)

After shining a torch in through the bumper, i can see the bottom boost hose to the intercooler is pretty gunked up on the join, but i think this is a common spot isn't it?

yeah common that is mate, clean it and refit... when i did mine i used some black silicone to seal the join nicely :)

To be honest mate I'd say that was normal turbo noise/whistle? It will be louder under boost and ease off when cruising. As for the low speed whistle it could be the egr valve - if you let the car idle after 30 secs or so, does the same noise come back?

  • Author

Yeah the noise comes back after 30secs - It was only cleaned out about 3 months ago though.

This noise of the EGR/Idle is definitely different to when driving. Its makes a slight noise all the time while driving, but definitely louder when spooling up quickly.

i'll have to try and get a video i think.

If it is just a whistle (like rushing air) and not a whine or police siren kind of noise then it sounds normal.

They are quite whistly compared to other cars. My dad has an older TDI 110 (ALH engine I think) and you can't hear his turbo at all.

If the noise is quite loudly audible inside the car almost like the sound is coming from the air vents then you have a leak.

If you want to get to the intercooler BTW just remove the wheel arch liner on the drivers side and you have plenty of access.

I recently took all mine off and cleaned it inside and out as it had a lot of road gunk stuck to the front of it and next to no air was passing through it.

Its hard when i have nothing to compare it to - its more of a whine to a whistle though...

With the windows closed, all i hear is the mentioned loud noise on fast spool. With windows open, its a bit annoying to be honest!

I'll try get some examples on the way home!

Mine was like that.

I think a slight boost leak meant oil was on the surface of the cooler, so the dirt stuck even more.

Was horrible!

That's exactly what mine looked like.

Quick blast down with the pressure washer and it was lovely and clean.

Phil

Mine also looked like the above, covered in oil, it had actually split at one end, was fully ******.

Bloomin' Eck! Mine is still silver - at least that is one thing thats definitely ok!

When my kkk was on its way out it sounded like a siren! So unless its like that, a whistle is deffinatly normal!

Hi,

My vrs is +1 with these funny sounds, has been doing it for 20k miles...

Need to fix it now, when the turbo is just helping it okay, when it hits peak boost it sounds like the aux belt is slipping.

I've taken the top boost pipe off (above the aux belt) and it was hardly tight. What are the tolerances of this sort of pipe?

Cheers

Matt

They do have some movement in the connection as they seal under pressure. Might be worth renewing the rubber seals on the joints. Very cheap from the dealers.

Popthe bonnet and rev so the turbo spools, you can see the pipes expand! All the joints should pull tight when under boost, although i don't know how easy it is to spot a leak...

Hi,

Just had a quick look and it sounds like the the seal closest the egr, sounds really horrible with the bonnet raised!

Anywhere to order the seals online, don't like going to skoda for such small parts.

I think the seals are just o-rings pushed into the recess of the egr to throttle body unit?

You are correct :)

Is it normal for oil to be on the inter-cooler then? Mine keeps getting covered in it :/ wondering if it's sucking oil up from somewhere?

Thanks

If you let some body else drive you will see a lot more smoke then you think ;) probably the turbo connector lug got a hole in or your inter cooler bottom pipe gonna give soon! Time for some self tappers and cable ties

Dude the oil comes from the top rocker cover breather into the inlet just after the maff sensor look up (elephant mod) and the oil is where your slight leaks are (boost) forcing oil on weak joints, best way round this load of junk ring darkside get a hard pipe kit and a seat sport inter cooler :) it will cost you a good 500 pounds but will save you months of chasing boost leaks, bin here got the t shirt hope this helps

Okay thank you, I was looking at putting a oil can on and doing the elephant mod too. Hopefully that will help a bit. Not really looking at spending £500 at the moment so will do that and see what the effect of that is.

Thanks

Elephant mod is a must I think to stop all the nasty oil vapours getting into the intercooler and pipework.

Also prevents a lot of the crud build up in the EGR and intake.

My intercooler was pretty horrible inside and my EGR was really sludgy and sticky.
