So what is the current situation with this, is there anyone out there that can flash upgrade these ECUs w/o having to open the ECU to get past the security lock/encryption ?

my 2011 VRS TSI is mapped through the OBD port, so I would say your odds are good. although mine is March 2011, but I doubt anything changed.

Mine is an October 2010 (2011MY) 1.8TSI and Shark have confirmed by scanning that it can't be remapped via the OBD port.

Well mine is September 2011 registered (MY12 model) so I guess the ECU is going to have to be opened - damn.

That makes any self install tuning an issue, must slow the installation for tuning dealers, like Revo dealers.

Bit like the early non-DBW 1.8T where when I was a Revo dealer having to plug direct into the ECU till they managed to crack flashing them using the odb port. Mind did get the art of getting to the ecu quicker each time we had one.
