Fog lights

Featured Replies

Out on a wee road trip last night all by my lonesome (as you do) and it got me thinking.... how hard would it be to link the front fog lights up to my full beam, just for a little extra oomph.

Anyone done this? Is it just a case of scotch blocking some wires from the headlights to the foglights or would i need some relays?

Should be a case of taking a trigger feed from the full beam lights and then taking it into a relay with a decent 12v source then to the fogs.

I guess you could just take some jumper cables, but I don't know what it would do to the standard wiring.

You would definitely need a relay, as the switch switches the actual wires, and you would overload the full beam power feed/fuse hooking it up to directly to the fog feed.

I suspect this would not be an issue at MOT time, as the fogs would only come on with full beam, and would otherwise operate independently. Definitely one thing to make 100% sure of first though.

Oh and don't use scotchlocs for anything on your car electrics! They work by cutting into the wires, and can cause problems. A portable gas soldering iron, decent wire stripper (that can pull the wire covering apart without breaking the wire) and heat shrink are the things to use.

They wouldn't only come on with the full beams surely? Or at least you could solder in a diode or two or stop it. . .

That's another good point, if you hooked full beam and fogs together without a diode, in addition to too much load on wire/fuse - full beams would come on whenever you put the fogs on.

This is another issue solved by a relay, as the relay itself would be switched only by the full beam.

Just Upgrade your Full beam to give you the lighting you need.

Your fog lights work as they should on Dipped beam.

With good full beam the scattered near to the vehicle from Fogs will add virtually nothing to lighting up the road ahead,

do you need the near verge lit up?.

You are going to have to have another switch to switch them on only when you want them on with the full beam, since you shouldnt be using then in addition anyway.

You might as well have Driving lights or Spots/Floods fitted for using with Full beam if you really need the extra lighting.

Have the back roads around Inverness become much darker at night time recently,

george

I have done it, it was quite a bit to get my head around as I didn't want it to work backwards ie I put my fogs on and my main beam is on blinding me in the fog. But it works grate I have become the kindest person in Carlisle flashing everyone out of junctions haha. All you need is a relay
