snapped bolt

Featured Replies

As the title I have a snapped bolt, a track rod end infact the car is a citroen saxo. After changing the coil springs using all new nuts and bolts, I started to torque them up when I got to the shiney new track rod end nut (although the bolt was still the old one as it is part of the track rod end) anyway whilst tightening the bolt snapped as it was very corroded and whats worse it wont even come out of the unthreaded hole on the strut! I think before snapping it twisted and dug its way in there and now it needs a new track rod end. Ive tried hammering it out with and without heat, drilling it out but all the new drill bit does is polish the surface! Ive even jacked the car up using a thin rod between the said bolt and the jack but the car leaves the ground! Any thoughts on this one? Apart from taking it to the garage to get them to heat it up white hot and knock it out.

I just use a big hammer on stuck tr ends, if you smack the mount area not the tr end on the side it will usually let go. That is if it is the track rod end, I was having trouble picturing it from the description

As Lofty said.

I'm a big hammer merchant too. If you can, use two hammers and welt it on opposite sides simultaneously. My son had a seized TRE on his Polo and I could only just get a removal tool on it, but not enough to get any decent force on before it'd slip off the end of the TRE thread. Ended up screwing as much force on as dare and walloped it a couple of times & hey presto. Oh, I gave it a good soaking in WD40 overnight for good measure in advance.

It's a bu*ger when they won't give, ain't it. :wonder:

If only everything was as simple as a vw lol on the saxo the track rod end moves the strut just below the spring and the lower part of the strut houses the wheel bearing its all one complete unit. I got it out anyway I upgraded my threaded splitter to the folk type and with some heat and hammer time it popped out, thanks guys.

Sounds like a drop link. Tre would have been connected to hub assemby surely? Unless its really built wierdly. I maintain citroen - why? When you can get polo/Fabia/even some little jap machines.

Defo a tre mate it screws into the track rod the rack is at the top in the engine bay on the firewall, it hasnt got a drop link, the strut is the hub with the wheel bearing and brakes at the bottom of it and the antiroll bar is bolted onto the wishbones. Crazy french! Oh and its not mine I wouldnt be seen dead lol I did the job for a friend.
