clutch

Featured Replies

Hi guys got a vrs, needs a new clutch as it has started slipping, but only in 3rd and 4th gear, im not planning on remapping, would a motor factors clutch be ok, and what prices do you reckon, is it worth changing the flywheel at the same time as the flywheels are like £300 without a clutch. also how hard are they to change? and how much would labour costs be, rough price

thanks

Just replace like for like would be my opinion. Don't go for cheap un-known brand items.

They are either an LUK or Sachs clutch and flywheel. These companies manufacture the OEM parts that were on the car originally.

I got a new Sachs clutch, flywheel and LUK slave cylinder (the LUK kit comes with this already) for £360.

Can't comment on labour as my labour costs included diagnosing and sending off the gearbox for a rebuild. I would have though about 2 to 3 hours labour would more or less cover it.

Found a Sachs with all the above for £379, it's only slipping in 3 and 4 gear which is annoying but can live with it for now, cheers for reply, any else know how much labour costs I would be looking at

Cheers

£40-60 an hour I recon 3-4 hours work at a max. So £120 - £240 depending on if you go to an Indy or dealer.

I was charged for 4 hours labour in total.

Which thinking about it is probably about right as they didn't actually repair the box just removed and had the repair company collect it then replace it along with the new clutch etc that I supplied.

3rd and 4th are fairly long gears so probably due to that. Once it starts slipping then it normally means new clutch time.

To be fair, mine started slipping in 3rd and 4th in September 2010 - I simply learnt to drive around it, and it's been fine since.

Fair dos... guess it's when it starts slipping all the gears you should worry :giggle:

Yes driving around it Is the way ATM but is going to get annoying

Thanks for replies

Well, I don't exactly baby it as people who've been on runs and the how fast track day with me will verify :)

How bad does your slip mine does it for 1000 revs

Erm, I'm not actually sure as I can't remember the last time it slipped.

I just feed the power in more gradual then I did before and it's not a problem.

To be fair, when it first started slipping, I think there was a glaze on the surface. A few hard starts sorted that :)

What mileage was yours on then? Mines on 86k

Mapped at 82k, now on 108k

Mine was also replaced at similar mileage. It wasn't slipping but the garage who changed it said that it was looking quite worn and also the DMF has some signs of wear on it.

It feels much smoother now and bites very hard.

Phil

Yeah if I was having the gearbox off then I'd definitely replace it, but until it breaks it's fine :)

Yup! If it ain't broke then don't fix it!

i did my wifes a few weeks back

got the whole kit from darkside £414 delivered next day, sachs clutch and flywheel and LUK release bearing, excellent service

when i rang them to order they asked me if it was standard or remapped and if so what power i was running or planning to runso as to get the right spec parts

Did you change the dmf as i can't afford to do the both ATM

Yes I did.

Like I say I got the lot delivered for £360 and it would have been silly not to replace it while I was at it. It does feel much smoother now and the loud vibration when putting your foot down has gone. I also had a bit of chatter while the clutch was half-engaged and sometimes just at idle with the clutch up.

Phil

I know everyone says they're crap but I used Mr Clutch, £250 and 4 hours later it was done and has been fine for 2 years.

Was that just the clutch? What make of clutch etc went into the car for that price?!

Phil

I assume that is just the clutch as the flywheel costs nearly that much

Just the clutch, flywheel was fine. I assume it was just a cheap clutch, but it's fine.
