Tell me all about the 1.6 please

Featured Replies

Just coerced the old dear into buying an auto 1,6 fabia on a 58 plate. Nice red with white roof.

Can you tell me anything about this car - especially to do with the engine please? I gather its chain drive, but thats all I know so far.

Thanks

PS: Its a "2" trim level.

It's pretty old tech I think similar to the 1.6 used in the octavia etc but this makes it nice and reliable/simple. MPI 16v and around 100hp I think.

Not much to say about them really. It's nothing amazing technology wise but will, I'm sure, be more than suitable for your old dear.

Probably looking at around 35mpg with the slush box auto.

Slightly different to the Felicia one is this. The one in the Felly had 75hp and was code AEE. Pretty sure it was belt driven not chain driven too.

This is 105hp, and yes 16v badge on the boot. I like the box with the ability to flick to the right and use up and down. I showed Mum and she said "I only have an automatic license" ..... [sigh] She'll leave it in D I suspect....

If it's the 1.6 BTS engine like I have in '57 Fabia 2, then it seems reliable and my ( manual ) does around 40 mpg . Can't get info on whether it's chain or belt cam drive as no Haynes manual yet. Anyone know when Haynes will produce?

Skoda service in the service record book seems to exclude BTS from routine belt change so maybe that's the clue - it hasn't got one ??

The engine has always rattled a bit on cold start but quietens down after a minute or so - hasn't got any worse in the two and a half years that I've had it.

Uses next to no oil.

You gotta loves Mums eh!?

Yeh I think they call that box the Tiptronic. It's basically an old school torque converter auto with 6 gears and the ability to click it up and down manually with the stick (not that it matters to your Mum by the sounds of it :giggle: ).

Might just be worth checking the engine code on the boot sticker or VIN number regards chain or belt.

In regards to the rattle this seems like a characteristic of most small vag engines. The 1.2's also have this.

There was also an issue apparant on some of the 1.2s where the chain would slacken and slip a tooth or 2 and cause some running problems. Not heard of anything with this 1.6 but then again there aren't as many of the 1.6's then the 1.2's about.
