Just test drove a Skoda Fabia Sport - 1.9tdi :)

Featured Replies

And it changed the way I perceived the Fabia models ! The salesman handed me the keys, and said take it out for an hour, and drive it as if I had stolen it .. So I did :)

It's got the 1.9tdi (105bhp) engine (PD unit ?) and it was a right blast ! A little bit noisy, but torquey and responsive ! Nice tight gearbox, and handling when turning corners etc.

The salesman stated that although it was 2010 plate model, it had no DPF filter ? Is that right ? I thought all diesels had these things nowadays ?

Seemed to be a facelift model, new style headlights, usual gadgets like air-con, climate control, auxillary port on centre console alongside the 12v port. Trip computer too. Keys were the VW Style / 3 button flip out ones .. 2 supplied.

Still under the manufacturers warranty until 29th April 2013, so no MOT until then, and remainder of Skoda Assist (AA ?) as well.

Any advice from people on here ? Anything to look out for with this model ? Done a search, and it seems that the Sport Variant is no longer produced ?

Cheers

Mark

Sounds like a good salesman. When I tested a vRS it took an age to run through paperwork, check out my car, etc. Then got a short test drive with the idiotic slaesman in the passenger seat talking drivel most of the time. When I tested the acceleration on an overtake past a bus (he had no visibility in the passenger seat but I had a great view) his face was a picture and went all quiet for a bit!

Can't comment on the model alas but sure someone who can will be along shortly.

It would be a pre fl model. The Sport only came in pre fl. 2010...so it would be a late pre fl. The 1.9tdi has no dpf unlike the greenline and the fl diesels.

Hate salesman like that.

When i looked at my monte. The salesman was happy for me to take the car out while he inspected and worked out figures on my corsa.

But in generaly he seem nice enough, he was youngish id say late 20's. Very unasuming and quite chilled and not at all pushy. Which i liked.

As for this topic. Sounds like a pre facelift model witha PD engine.

Never beena fan of PD style engines and any type of car sound so noisey and unrefined (but very good engine regardless of that)

Just prefer comman rail engines myself

Cheers people - all replies appreciated ! Oh, one thing that did puzzle me was no visual temperature gauge ? Just had a blue light on the dash @ start-up, which disappeared after a minute or so ..

sounds like you're about to get your hands on a nice little motor. Don't worry about the lack of DPF, that's just superfluous IMO and not required if you like to take a 'spirited drive' ;) 1.9TDi PD are possibly? one of the best engines to come from VW, again, just my opinion and I'm certain others may disagree:D

not sure if that model does or doesn't have a DPF, but you almost certainly DON'T want one if you can help it!

I thing all fabias with out maxi dot have same temp set up. There is a red coolent light too should the car get to hot.

mine has no maxi-dot, and a 'proper' temp guage :)

Hmm my 2011 fabia has no gauge and no maxi-dot so made the asumption from that :/

I had the Mk 1 1.9 TDI PD Fabia Estate, it is a cracking engine, a bit long in the tooth now but no issues other than it isn't (wasn't) chain driven so needed the belt changed around 60,000 miles. The economy and performance when mated to the little fabia is a blast but as you say can be a bit noisy. If I change my 1.2 the 1.9Tdi will be high on my want list I reckon.

The display on this Fabia Sport was like the picture at the bottom of this page (under the description on Maxi Dot Trip Computer) ...

Not sure if it's classed as a facelift, but they did make some subtle changes to the Fabia in 2010

SWMBO has a 1.9 TDi Sport, and the interior is definitely different from earlier models, and possibly the exterior too

Drives very well, and hugely economical, even when driving in a spirited fashion

Easily tuning options as well, I should imagine :)

The skoda page is wrong as ever, that is not maxi-dot. Thats the standard computer.

Took it out his afternoon for another 1hr+ test drive with wife & kids.

Dropped it off and paid a deposit. Will probably pick it up on the 1st Sep now. Would happily pick it up earlier but it needs taxing, and I'm not paying for 3 weeks of tax that I wouldn't get the benefit from :(

Thanks for all the help people - much appreciated :)

Oh, and all this talk about VAGcom ... is it possible to get software for my laptop and a cable somewhere ?

I have a handheld OBDII terminal that reads fault codes etc, but I'm guessing that I need a vagcom unit now ?

  • 2 weeks later...

A good decision, i have a mk1 1.9tdi elegance and it is excellent, i have had it chipped and it out runs bloody gti's !, they don't even try to race given its the comfy elegance model and i bet their a bit shocked when i scorch off at the lights ! I have been trying to buy another 1.9tdi (not to change mine but as a second car) but in the new shape, say a 2009 but it is proving very difficult, when i called a dealer (today) about one that he had, he told me it had been with him less than a day and had been sold ! He said that they are in great demand due to them NOT having a dpf, and all the issues that are coming from them, he then attempted to flog me one of the 1.6tdi's......I don't think so ! He laughted and then said i had made the right decision..... So the hunt is on for a 59 or 10 plated 1.9tdi elegance in 5 door hatch guise.... anybody !
