Octy vRS vs Superb 2.5TDi

Featured Replies

Wasn't too sure where to post this but thought more people may spot it in here rather than the Superb Forum.

Anyway, last Friday I had a very spirited drive with my colleague who has just purchased an Octy vRS ('05 plate, Black Magic). He was in his new car, and was driving my dad's 2.5 TDI Tiptronic Elegance Superb (in Sahara Beige).

It was a very enthusiatic drive by both of us down a dual carriage way and motorway. This involved a fair bit of slowing down to 50, 60 before we could then accelerate up to 70mph (yeah right). Anyway I was very suprised how easily the big, heavy, automatic diesel barge with its full leather, heated seats all round and umbrella in the rear door kept up with the "sportier" octavia.

I know the Octy only had a just over 1000 miles on it but this guy was not holding back (not one for running it in!) whereas the Superb has around 11,000 on it.

Anyway the frist thing he said to me today was, "Blimey, that Superb was quick!"

I'm not knocking the Octy, as I don't think the Superb would have had the legs over it, but when we could both put our feet down the Octy certainly wasn't getting away quickly, if at all. Maybe now I've convinced him to get a remap.

(There is no need to start going on about price differences, as yes I know if he spent the money he'd saved on the Octy it would be quicker, and have an umbrella in the back, I was just suprised that it kept up).

If they ever brought out a Superb vRS I'd be at the front of the queue!!!!

Why not just get the 1.8T Superb, remap and add some K03's, arb and the like - jobs a good un :D

Diesels are fast in real world driving. I just read a test on some 'warm hatches' in Test Drive magazine. Although the Seat they tested was 150 bhp and faster 0-60 than the Furbie, in real driving it struggles to keep up out on the road apparently.

Auto diesel would be good in situation you described but I would say 1.8T gets better with miles....at least 10k before it has really loosened up....don't kno whow much of a difference it would have made though.

I have an identical Superb to your Dad and I agree that it is much faster in "real driving" that the performance figures suggest. How often do we want to accelearte quickly from 0 to 60? Not as often as we want to accelerate from 30 or 40 to 70 to quickly overtake and that is where the punch on the Superb is good. Interesting to see it keeps up with the VRS
