Does the Yeti need a sunroof?

Featured Replies

I'd be interested in people's views on this. I stopped specifying sunroofs on my cars when good air con became available. Why put up with the wind noise and the draughts when you can just select the temperature you want? But - Yetis with sunroofs have a much lighter and, to my mind, nicer cabin environment. I've come to the conclusion that what I would like is a non-opening glass roof with a pull over blind for when it gets too hot. Should be a lot cheaper and it's one less thing to go wrong.

What does everyone think?

  • I like you too, Oriki - you are obviously a great judge of character

  • I'm guessing you've not had a yeti with one for a day or so as they certainly don't give any of the issues you mention. ;-) Its my favourite factory option and one I wouldn't be without now on the fam

  • Some have reasons not to have a sun roof, others have the opposite. Each to their own. I won't get into a pi$$ing contest on what other people want as an option to their car. Lets just be happy that w

I had my last car for 8 years and never opened the sunroof, and always kept the blind over it to stop the heat from the sun. - It had aircon for hot days.

My Yeti was ordered without the sun roof for that reason.

There you are, yetifabia.Look what bgw has to say.

Do you need the sunroof ... probably not.

Is it great? Yes. Would I prefer it to be fixed? No. It is great to pull it right back and have the wind in your hair (if you have any!).

Maybe there should be the option of a fixed one and an opener.

Pretty much the same as bgw. Rarely used the sunroof in my Orion (even with no air-con) and only used the one in my Octy a handful of times in 9 years, just for the novelty. The only time it was used in earnest was so I could fit in some long lengths of timber! I always kept the blind shut as light from above can cause reflections in my glasses. It was fitted as standard but I preferred the climate control. I opted for the Gobi interior in the Yeti to make it lighter inside, so didn't see any reason for the sunroof (and couldn't justify the cost). No one else in the family was bothered about having one either.

Does the Yeti need a sunroof??? YES

Why? --------------------------- Because My Wife says so!!!!!!!!!

Regards

Mike

I saw absolutely no point in having a sun roof with climate control.

First Yeti was never ordered with one, but secong time round I did spec one of the wife's car.

Partly because I wanted to "spec it up" and partly because I wanted it to feel different from mine, as they are both red 12 plate Elegances.

As I said, didn't see the point.

But heavens I am very impressed!

This is no ordinary sunroof, this is a full length glass panel that really fills the interior with light. It's huge.

The blind is great, stopping the heat but still letting a bit of extra light though.

This is not like the porthole sunroofs of old, this thing is great! :)

Does a Yeti need one, imo no.

Do they look good, without a doubt.

Did I spec one for my Yeti, no.

As much as they look awesome, too many issues exist with them, no just on the Yeti but on many other cars with similar panoramic roofs, Merc, BMW etc.

Im sure I was told that it was one company that was supplying all the manufacturers, is this the case?

2 weeks ago I would not have bothered with a sunroof if the car had air con.... However my my used Yeti had it. Over the last two weeks the bilnd has been used more than the roof just to let more light in and give a lighter inside. When open there is a tad more noise at speed but thats it. Great for letting the heat out and comfortable when tilted open. Just my thoughts but an option on my next car would be on my short list.

These things are far better then the sun roofs of old.

I bought an ex demo and therefore didn't have the decision to make. I've had sunroofs on several cars over the year and hardly ever used one-but really liked the extra light and feeling of space on al the glass ones.

If ordering now I'd certainly have one although I would be almost as pleased with a non opening version.

And another that goes with the NO camp.

Servicepoint, apparantly yes there is only one supplier currently.

Interesting that some insurance companies will not include them in the window cover, so could be very expensive if it had to be replaced.

You quite clearly have not been in a Yeti with a sunroof.

It's a WHOLE new environment. and well worth the investment.

Aircon uses fuel, so If I can let in a nice fresh breeze, then IMHO its better than air con :p

Does it use a lot of fuel, Mac? I haven't noticed my consumption worsening because I have the air con on. It may on small petrol engines but I doubt there is much effect on these diesels.

I'm sure one of the magasines did a test and the worst for fuel consumption was having the windows open.

Ok, shoot me down in flames Graham :D

.................I know it does;t use that much, as engines are very efficient now.

Kitten is not bothered about the sunroof in Ivor, but I LOVE it

I think all cars should have a glass sunroofs (apart from convertible obviously). I didn't spec one on my Yeti as I am not allowed (S model).

I am one of those people who have the sunroof blind open permanently, even when it's burning outside. I even have my sunroof open (not just the blind) during the winter on my last car (turned out to be a stupid idea when there's still snow on the car! woops)

Mac,

BANG!

My Yeti,

but what about those that don't want it? Freedom of choice?

I like sunroofs

All cars should have them

I had a sunroof on my octy, only used it very rarely.

When we specd our yeti, it was considered, but quickly discounted.

The biggest problem with the one in the octy was drain problems and wet floors.

In my case when the car was parked facing uphill, which is how our drive was.

There have been issues with early yetis, with the same problem.

I am not convinced, over the extended life of any car, that this problem will not occur in at least some instances.

For me, and because of potential for wet carpets, the answer is no.

I've always been happy with whatever sunroof I've had in previous cars from 'canopener' aftermarket to expensive OE. So I did consider it for my Yeti when I was specifying it.

TBH the cost put me off somewhat but the confirming factor was the loss of headroom I found when getting into the back seat.

Would be happy if I could get some sun, :rain: then decide if a sunroof was necessary :sun: .

Bob

I considered it when ordering mine, but the dealer was unable to take the order, so I was unable to specify it.

The point is that I have been in a Yeti with a sunroof and I love the extra light - I just don't want to open the damn thing :sun: I think there is a (small) fuel consumption increase from aircon - but as Graham says - there is with windows/sunroofs being opened as well.

Overall, I think the vote goes against opening sunroofs. Since I started this topic I've been observing higher spec cars around my village and it's noticeable that the sunroof has all but disappeared. However, I do think that a non-opening glass panel the same size as the Yeti sun roof would genuinely be, "simply clever"
