Does the Yeti need a sunroof?

Featured Replies

Does it use a lot of fuel, Mac? I haven't noticed my consumption worsening because I have the air con on. It may on small petrol engines but I doubt there is much effect on these diesels.

I'm sure one of the magasines did a test and the worst for fuel consumption was having the windows open.

With the Yet as aerodynamic as an Aga it would be interesting how much the open sunroof would make to the fuel economy. I'd try it but I'd need to drive with an umbrella up. :giggle:

  • I like you too, Oriki - you are obviously a great judge of character

  • I'm guessing you've not had a yeti with one for a day or so as they certainly don't give any of the issues you mention. ;-) Its my favourite factory option and one I wouldn't be without now on the fam

  • Some have reasons not to have a sun roof, others have the opposite. Each to their own. I won't get into a pi$$ing contest on what other people want as an option to their car. Lets just be happy that w

The other problem with Sunroofs (open) or windows (down) is the fine layer of dust that gets everywhere. Admittedly with the current level of rainfall, dust is the least of our worries!

The old dilemma 'sunroof OR aircon' isn't real, IMHO - they do different jobs and aren't mutually exclusive. We 'need' aircon a lot of the time (remember when we just had heaters?), which just isn't true for sunroofs. We've had three (I think) cars with sunroofs and they all came-with-the-car rather than being specified; we open them for fun, when the weather's right (not necessarily always in summer) and when we just feel like some fresh air round us while we cruise! Most of the time the blind is shut as well as the roof because, like dgb400, I don't like the reflections that top-light gives on my specs. Mpg is totally irrelevant under these circumstances.

For the six, eight, ten, times a year that we would have the roof open for a few minutes each year, the cost was quite unjustifiable for our new (almost there!) Yeti. Madam has made sure, though, that the X-Trail's lid has been open as much as possible during this very long summer wait!

For me, no it's not necessary and I haven't got one fitted.

Like many others I had sunroofs in cars before and they very rarely got opened.

I find the cabin in the yeti light enough, even with the black interior and they climate control does its job very well.

It does use slightly more fuel but only about a couple of mpg difference.

I think the open sunroof would use more than that ?

Well I just love my sunroof and wouldn't be without it. My last 4 cars have all had them, it being one of the reasons why I bought them.

With the blind permanently open to let loadsa light in it's a pleasure to drive. How many of you have had the roof open on a crisp sunny frosty morning with the air-con on full belt (to keep yer tootsies warm) just for the hell of it, or had all the windows and roof open at night on a warm late summer evening down a country road with all the smells of nature apart from cow poo. It's like having part saloon part sports car, changeable at the touch of a switch. Sure in winter or extreme heat in summer close everything up and use the air-con and climate control but to have a motor without a sunroof.....unthinkable!!!!!

I had a panoramic glass roof on my Roomster and it cracked! Luckily SUK replaced it under warranted but it got my attention when the fitter told me it would have cost over £1300 if I'd had to pay for it :| !

This experience made me very wary of ordering one for the Yeti. Do I miss it? No.

Sunroof or not? I would say no, the car has a pollen filter and A/C why do you need a hole in the roof that could leak? Did I mention hay fever, so A/C all the way for me.

I also wonder why cabriolet cars have pollen filters.....

And another that goes with the NO camp.

It's very much a personal choice. One further point is that you are unlikely to get much money back on resale when specifying a sun-roof.

If you don't have a sunroof the it is harder to use it as an armed patrol car.....with the sun roof somebody can stand up through the hole with their automatic machine gun- you have seen the YouTube video of why you need the sun roof

And from the other perspective; if I looked at two yetis, one with and one without a sunroof. I'd buy the one that had it and be happy paying a little extra for it. It's my single favourite option I specified and i get an advantage from it each and every day, even it's just letting in lots of natural light. :-) Travelling in my work colleagues non sunroof equipped 1.4 tsi yeti seems almost depressing comparatively!

mine had it, so I had no choice. I had the option of buying a car with a sunroof for delivery in a week, or waiting several months if I ordered one without a sunroof. It is a lovely accessory. Great airy feeling in the car, even if it's not really been warm enough to have it open in the year I have had the car. The aircon has hardly ever been on either (for the same reason)

I have a sunroof - SWMBO thought the Yeti cabin was oppressive without it. Opening? Gets rid of wet dog fast, and I have blessed it when I had to get a rather large ebay purchase on board.

I had a full length panoramic roof on my Picasso C4 Exclusive - it didn't open and it had a cover. I would've loved something similar on the Yeti cos living in the Lake District we (and I hasten to add the passengers) often gaze up at the top of the hills, fells, mountains to see the view and spot walkers whilst we're driving about.

You save fuel when you have a sunroof! Well sort of. Park your car in the sun and leave it on tilt to let the hot hair out BEFORE you get back. So your AC hardly has to work to cool the car down in the first 10 minutes of you setting off. For this alone I would always specify an openable sunroof (and NEVER a fixed sunroof like the Cashcow and Peugeots have - they just let the heat in and NO way to let it out - daft).

There is alas also the argument that the fuel you save on the AC in the summer is negated by the additional 35kg you have to cart around ALL the time high up in the car, but hey ho, I'm happy doing that as it bathes the car in sunlight all the time. I never ever close the blind either - as it really does ZERO to keep heat out.

See some pics here of mine and how lovely it bathes the car in light:

I'm a LOT browner and the Yeti has 1800 new European miles under his belt!

1800 euro miles? Pah! You big girls blouse!! ;-) :giggle: (is ready for the prompt for photos of my trip....) ;-)

Thats quite a different design - being bonded in place means it will be twisted with the cars outer body more. Although less torsionally stiff, the Yeti's opening, two piece design means that its less prone to shattering Id have thought?

100% agree with this. Fixed sunroofs become part of the car's structure hence are under quite some stress. The merest rock or something hitting it will crack and / or shatter it. On a Yeti the opening is braced and the sunroof can move as well as expand and retract in the heat / cold separately from the car's body. A much better solution.

[ And my 1800 miles is a full 10% of my car's total mileage! So yes a fair bit for my Monster! And yes we want to see your pics Lee! ]

Doesn't your blind close automatically? Mine always does. Luckily in the year since I got the car temperatures have never got to the levels where I need air conditioning to cool down.

No, it only closes automatically every night if you have the Auto close (when it rains) feature ticked. And for this very reason I do not have this feature ticked. See this thread:

Aha, well with the weather as it is just now I think I'll just leave the rain closing enabled

  • 2 months later...

For those who are Elegance owners, or ordered the option...enjoy !!!

For the rest...get over it !!! :'(

I had my last car for 8 years and never opened the sunroof, and always kept the blind over it to stop the heat from the sun. - It had aircon for hot days.

My Yeti was ordered without the sun roof for that reason.

Hear! Hear!

In my last car I could never stand the hot sun on my head with the blind open. Up to A/C in practically every car now it used to be A/C or sun roof. Now with A/C there is not much point.

Also I don't really like the idea of a big sheet of glass over the passenger compartment - rather have steel - stronger and it doesn't leak!
