Bowden cable catch

Featured Replies

I've had my gearbox locking pin replaced today and the oil topped up (was missing a litre!), so I'm ready for step 2 of my plan to return my ability to change from 5th to 4th gear. The rubber bush in at least one of my "Bowden cable catches" is on its way out and I'm guessing the other is too so I want to do both in one shot. VAGCat suggests there are three possible part numbers: 1J0 711 761A, B, and C and I'm not sure which I need. If I'm correct then from what I've Googled and been told by TPS, then I need the B and C variants as the pins are different sizes for side/side and front/back meaning each catch can only fit in one position. Has anyone else changed these parts and does this sound right?

Question 2 is, do the ends just come off the cables once they're undone? Because the guy at TPS only seems to want to sell me the full cable setup as well as the catches (at £40 each), I don't really want to buy it as I'm totally confident that the cables are fine, the crap shifting is down to the rubber perishing. Is there anywhere I can get just the catches themselves? Or am I going to have to try and find a 6-speed VW in a scrappers....

edit - just realised that although it's in my profile, mobile users can't see, but I drive a 2005 ASZ vRS with the 02M 6-speed box

Ok, So Ive bought new Cable Catches.... now Does anyone have any idea how to swap these over onto the existing linkage?

I know its possible as skoda sell the parts separately, but im scared to just go with trial and error as I really need to be able to select gears.

Ive put it off long enough, changing gears in it now is like trying to drive an old hired transit.

If anyone has swapped these before tips would be greatly appreciated,

If you are meaning how to get the cables adjustment right, there is a set procedure for doing this, maybe Google it but use VW gearbox to improve the returned searches.

Have the spring on the cable end in it's compressed state as shown in your link above. Pass the threaded end of the shift cable into the catch and twist the rotary knob to release the spring. The cable will then be gripped by the catch. Attach the cable end to the gearbox shifter. On earlier models they just press on, on later models they have a circlip type thing.

If yours are the press on type you can use a 13mm open ended spanner to remove the old ones.

When fitted perform the gear linkage adjustment procedure.

You're welcome.

It's not difficult, but like all of these things, it depends on your ability.
