When should a CV joint get replaced?

Featured Replies

I have a 06 Skoda Octavia 1.6L Petrol with 95k KM done.

When should the CV joint get replaced?

95k KM is nothing for a CV joint, my old 2005 Octavia had 160k KMs and was still running perfectly on the original joints.

Ok thanks.

Basically I'm about to book it in for a timing belt change and was wondering what else needs changing at the 95K Km mark while they're at it.

Water pump - It's about 10 minutes work, and they last about 1.5 times the timing belt change interval. So it saves you several hours labour costs.

Brake fluid, unless you have evidence of it having been changed in the last year or so.

Thanks for the info

You shouldnt get a cv joint replaced as its not much more to have the whole drive shaft replaced in a fraction of the time it takes to remove a drive shaft and replace a cv joint, and the new drive shaft will include both inner and outer joints.

Interesting, what's the price on an OEM driveshaft with joints and the price for the CV?

Never priced a full oe shaft up but I fitted an aftermarket n/s driveshaft on a sharan because the inner joint had gone and it worked out cheaper to change the whole shaft as the inner joint is a dealer part anyway...total cost for the whole shaft was under £50 and it only took me 25mins, now a cv joint replacement takes alot longer adding to labour costs and you only get the one joint, and theres a good chance that the other joint will need to be changed soon aswell further adding to labour costs.

That's perfectly logical and you're spot on about Labour charges being a bugger.

Priced the full shaft whilst at TPS today and they wanted £320! I paid just under £50 at ECP for an aftermarket one that does the job for much less.

Ahh but was that a Q-Drive or a decent one?

The Q-Drive stuff I've seen hasn't even been fitted before going back, because it's looked so far from OEM spec I didn't trust it myself.

It was the Q drive mate, I recently used it on a saxo too, it went on OK time will tell though.
