Back ache from drivers seat

Featured Replies

Reading many comments on the forum reference pain from drivers seat, has anyone found any padded car drivers car seat covers that will soften up the backrest that keeps giving me lower back pain.

Followed the comments reference lowering the tilt angle that has got rid of the numb right buttock but in this position causes lower back pain.

With the base tilted down is it best to have the seat up high or low?

It appears that when you raise or lower the seat base the relationship to the seat backrest stays the same. So when i lower the base tilt the lumber when fully retracted still ends up feeling like it is putting pressure on the sacrum causing numbness in lower back.

Is there not much padding over the lumber !!!! Has anyone found it better with the seat reclined or vertical?

Tried seating on foam cushions to raise back about lumber and this helps but is not the answer for a top of the range superb as then the bolsters dont hold you in the seat.

Have i made a mistake buying a skoda as this is my second superb in five months as skoda took the first one away after 4 months as it feel apart with some many problems and replaced it with this one.

Do the leather seats ever soften up, upto 9k miles so far and still rock hard. Only other suggestion is to try padded car seat covers if anyone has any recommendations, get rid of the car which would be a shame as its a great car apart from the uncomfortable drivers seats, or look at having spacers plates fitted between the base and backrest of the seat but can only find instructions on how to do it myself on the web from websites in europe.

Or has anyone got any other suggests to help solve this problem??

Well I on my 5th skoda up to now and have had very few problems.

I cant comment on the leather seats as mine is an se spec greenline so has the alacantra seats and they are fine.

Im not in the driving position I had in my octavia as the seat are firmer but I found if I raised the seat a bit more than usual and sat a bit more upright it is fine.

Ive only had the car a week but have done almost 1600 miles in it.

I always had a quite laid back position but I am getting a bit older.

You could try and test out the non leather seats on a demo car at the dealers.

Or you could try a chiropractor to see if the problem is more your driving position or if it could be something with your back.

I am on my third Superb Elegance, used this set up on number 1 took some time, but then on two and three a few minutes.

Very little difference in the seats in all three, a lot depends on the leather they use on the facings and sides, there can be a lot of difference in the batches, you will never get exactly the same feel in every vehicle. All three have had different feel of the leather, but very little.

I have never had any problem with the seats, even though I drive from time to time from Cornwall to Scotland in one trip.

I have had very uncomfortable seats in Jags and Bentleys, Skoda are certainly no worse than others.

Initial driving position and posture guide

Take the time to familiarise yourself with ALL the adjustments (e.g. seat, steering wheel, seat belt).

Start by getting the seat into the ‘initial set up position’, where adjustable:

Steering wheel fully up and fully forward

Seat height at its lowest

Cushion tilted so that front edge in lowest position

Back rest approximately 30 degrees reclined from vertical

Lumbar support adjustment backed off

Seat fully rearwards

Suggested sequence of adjustments for highly adjustable driving packages

1. Raise the seat as high as is comfortable to improve your vision of the road.

Check you have adequate clearance from the roof.

Ensure you have maximum vision of the road.

2. Move the seat forwards until you can easily fully depress the clutch pedal and accelerator pedal.

Adjust seat height as necessary to give good pedal control.

3. Adjust cushion tilt angle so that the thighs are supported along the length of the cushion.

Avoid pressure behind the knees.

4. Adjust back rest so it provides continuous support along the length of the back and is in contact up to shoulder height.

Avoid reclining the seat too far as this can cause excessive forward bending of the head and neck and you may feel yourself sliding forwards on the cushion.

5. Adjust the lumbar support to give even pressure along the length of the back rest.

Ensure lumbar support ‘fits’ your back, is comfortable with no pressure points or gaps.

Thanks for replies.

Will go and spend some time following the instructions on how to set up driving positions but i dont think i will be able to prevent any pressure on my sacrum as when sat in seat there is always a hard pressure spot below the lumber support.

May be it is the seat backrest that has collapsed again like my previous superb after 4k miles!

Never had any problems with backache before or any other car make before with leather driving seats had jaguars, fords, mazdas, peugeots, toyotas, vauxhalls, MG's, Austins normally jump in a car set up seat and keep it unchanged for 4 years then sell and move on to next car but are all VAG models rock hard and tricky to set up and do they sag and get worse as time goes on?

Still interested if anyone has any recommendations for car seat covers for protecting the leather seats as well as extra padding. Any links, has anyone fitted any?

have the same issue. Didnt have a problem first 6 months. Thinking about the back rest is broken - not possible to back off completely. Asked service to check the seat with the planned service. Dissapointing having this problems on flag ship elegance model car. :(
