hi all great site on my 3rd skoda current one fabia 2 1.4 85 bhp but looking to change, not sure 1.2 tsi or 1.6 tdi

10k a year 20 mile round trip to work 14 miles of which is motor way seems a lot of 12month to 24 month old of the 1.6 tdi for sale got 5k to spend plus mine part ex.any advice.

At that mileage I'd suggest the tsi. I have it in the yeti and it's a cracking package. Have driven the furby with it and it's great. My wife even has the 1.2 tsi in a golf. Brill engine (we both used to drive skoda and Audi 2.0 diesels).

I would say TSI. Probably not much in it for cost as TSI would be cheaper to buy but diesel slightly cheaper to run but to live with the TSI would be much nicer.

Much quicker to warm up and more confident overtaking due to the better massive rev range of the TSIs.

I regularly get the 86 TSI as a loan car when one of my fleet of Skodas is in, HTP in this week, and even that 86hp is good so the 105 hp should be even better.

you are on the cross over between what people consider to be the choice of petrol or diesel

you are not doing really short trips so clogging of the DPF on a CR diesel should not be a worry

one other to possibly consider is a 1.2 tdi greenline? they say 75ps but mine feels quicker, mpg is good (avg 65mpg on mine at moment at 5k miles), £0 road tax compared to £20 road tax on the 1.6tdi

depends on your budget and what you want from your car

1.6 crtdi 105 bhp hands down, however mileage has to be above 10 k per annum to be worth it , if not go for the petrol

which is one of the reasons i mentioned the greenline, as due to mpg the crossover is nearer 6-7k miles

but depends if benjoe want economy or something more fun to push now and again

1.6tdi, could even be looking at a monte carlo :)

Yes a 1.6 TDI would be the sensible option. but i was coming from 3 years with a CDTi 1.3 Corsa (being my first diesel car.) i was Averaging 50-55MPG, and looking at the figures i had seen from i expected the TSI to at least do 40-45ish so with the differnce in price between petrol and diesel i was happy that i would notice any major differences in cost.

Plus i got feed up wit the sound and narrow rev range of my little diesel.

The other considiration was spec and avalibity.

I had my heart set on a Monte. As my insurance/wallet wouldnt stetch to a VRS lol)

And with the Monte being quite sporty in apprence i felt the diesel would ruin that (yes im fully aware of the diesel versions of the old fabia and octavia VRS') but too me a sporty petrol. Car is more appealing.

And so far im very impressed with the little engine.

Its very subtle and smooth when crusing on the motorway or taking it easy through town/b-roads. But seems eager and playful when pushed. And the engine/exhaust note is wierdly quite nice and seems to encourage you to rev it a bit.

The diffferences between petrol and diesel is all down to opinion and your requirements in term of costs. No one really can decide for you.

It was my dad who pushed me to getting a lil diesel car and i personally hated it missed the petrol cars.

I personally would have a diesel smaller then a 2.0 or in a small hatch. But thats me.

I have the TSI and do more or less the same as you and it is perfect.

In my 2.0 PD Octavia the trip computer (I know I know, they're not 100% accurate) used to consistently read pretty much 48 mpg . In the Yeti 1.2 tsi it reads 42 around town and if I'm on a longer run it reads between 45-48. In my wife's Golf it retruned 55 mpg on a run to Aberdeen and back - sitting at roughly 80 on the motorway.

Factor in the cheaper fuel cost and the extra cost of the diesel engine and suddenly diesel is no longer quite so attractive.

Horses for courses - my Dad has the 1.2TSI. Mum drives it to work, so much shorter journeys in the week, but long journeys at weekends (thay visit us a lot - 65 miles each way and my Brother every 3 months - Birstol to Scarborough).

Dad is miffed that he cannot get anywhere near the advertised govt economy figure, in fact he is only slightly more cheerful after his last trip to us saw him approaching 48mpg (I think).

I have a 105 CR TDI Monte, following on from a couple of other diesel Skodas (Greenline Superb, PD 140 Octavia) and the Monte flies. It is not traditionally diesel feeling to drive, more like a petrol. I do diverse journeys, have done just over 5000 miles in 3 months and am returning 50mpg - I KNOW that a TSI wouldn't get near that. FACT. Also, the weaker torque of the petrol means I think it would be slower real world.

Yes, they are both small and have 105 bhp, but the 1.6 CR TDI is not a traditional 2000-3000 rpm diesel power band and relishes being wrung out a bit. It is equally happy to spin along at the pace of traffic.

As most above have advocated the petrol (as they have one) and I am saying I would prefer the diesel (irrelevant if I would really prefer a bigger petrol car - not in price range), you probably need to go to a delaer with both and take them for the same test drive.

Bear in mind though, neither car may feel "right" on a 30 minute test drive, but it may give you a better understanding.

here you go, some real world figures https://www.fuelly.com/car/skoda/fabia/2012 there is a 1.2 listed there and a 1.6. Looks to me like the 1.6 driver is averaging about 2 mpg better than the 1.2.

My own average is lower because I mainly do short trips round town with a weekly run over a twisty back road over the hills to my parents. But on a good run it picks up - but then the yeti is a lot heavier and less aerodynamic than a fabia.

As has been said, go and do some test drives. I was far from convinced about the 1.2 but then I had a good long test drive and was sold on it.

On a typical 30mile Commute im hitting 48MPG ocasionally hitting 50MPG.

This is trying to maintain 65ish MPH in a 1.2 86BHP.

Of i push to 70-80 im looking low 40's

On a 30 mile run I get between 70-80 mpg ;)

Thanks all for advice, my 3year old 1.4 bhp is showing 49mpg on the trip and last week 120 mile round trip up to 55 mpg, I will test drive both engines i think the mpg posts takes over from opinions in general on the which engine to go for subject.
