Smoking vRS MK1

Featured Replies

Ok guys, ideas please...

I know the TDI PD engines smoke a bit but every day on my way to work, I get to a certain part of the route, boot it and she smokes heavily through the gears at higher revs...

My journey takes me gently on the A26, 30/40 MPH limits which I stick to and drive quite conservatively while the engine warms up. I then go on the A21, again driving reasonably steady, onto the M25 for a few miles to the first junction, off the roundabout back onto the A21 (dual carriageway) it is at this point that I boot it to get back up to speed due to other traffic coming off the roundabout at a fair pace and use the higher rev range in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th - here's where the black smoke bellows out...

I haven't noticed any specific lack of power with the car, it is a BLT engine and not mapped at all, I use Shell Diesel, sometimes V-Power but no difference between them...

Any ideas guys?

Sounds like a normal diesel to me! Wide open throttle after a while of conservative driving usually gives an extra bit of smoke.. Black smoke = unburnt diesel, and generally nothing to worry about on a diesel unless it is doing it all the time.

I guess so, it just seems more and more frequent :wonder:

Black smoke -> unburnt fuel.

Since it's not mapped, it shouldn't do more than odd puffs.

If it does, that suggests either worn injectors or low boost. You could try a new air filter if it's been more than a couple of years since, but it looks like a VCDS session to check injector duty cycles and boost levels.

How bad is it? Get a video of It. And are you sure it's not mapped?

So after the initial smoke out, does it continue? Or stop after the one time?

Well, the first owner was a "little old lady" and she traded it back into the supplying dealership where Ad Lav found it and bought it, I subsequently bought it off him. I have known Adam for years and he hasn't had it mapped, she didn't (to our knowledge!) and nor have I...

It continues through the gear changes and I can also see it if I pull away quickly 5 mins or so afterwards...

Been looking through forum and will check pipe connections later but have no loud turbo noises...

Seeing as its not mapped then it should only have unburnt diesel low down when off boost. Not throughout the rev range.

If its smoking then the ecu is injecting fuel based on the information it's receiving from either the MAF or MAP sensor. BLT's can either have their smoke map based on either of them. Just depends on your ecu.

So if it's getting the signals then their must be something wrong after them. So I'd check boost piping.

That seems alot of oil coming from that boost pipe!

  • Author

But where's it coming from??

Solutions please - car seems to drive well still, just smoking under acceleration....can't help thinking she'll go even better if this is dealt with... :wonder:

Pretty sure the hole in the first pick should be blocked....

Oooooh, thanks Trev, anyone able to share pics of theirs for comparison??

Don't think it's meant to be blocked, but it's not meant to leak. Clean the pipes and intercooler and fit a catch can

Just looked and it is indeed "plugged" - looks OEM so that is fine but I took the boost pipe off (pics in a min) and there is a good coating of oil which I don't believe should be there...thoughts please!!!

May also be worth mentioning - I get a "whistle" noise when accelerating at 2000 - 2500 RPM...through the gears....

That's normal enough I've Seen worse
