Retro fit HID on FL Octavia?

Featured Replies

I know there are several topics on HID's but I just bought a set of Canbus Pro from HIDSDIRECT. Fitted them at the weekend and only one light worked. I thought this was probably a duff bulb and swapped the light unit over and plugged in to prove the ballast units were OK.

I received another bulb kit and re-installed the whole kit tonight. Now they both don't work at all when plugged into the light units but proved the kit is OK when tested from the battery supply only. The original bulbs are now back in and everything is OK. I checked there is 12v at the original bulb holder so can't understand why they are not working.

My car is 2011 vRS.

Has anybody had similar problems on this FL model?

Sorry but have to ask, did you plug them correctly on the original plug.

Yes, I'm a time served aircraft elec technician!

I´m not questioning what you do.

It´s what normally is asked with this.

Try plugging the negative directly to the chassis, actually that´s how I have mine.

So, power on original plug the negative touching the chassis.

From what I know there two type of HID sets on sale And only one, more expensive one, works with new cars. I can't remember the reason but it has sth to do with new ECUs or something...

I stripped them back out so I'll contact the supplier tomorrow. I read several posts about Canbus kits damaging the controller but I went for this more expensive kit as it stated that they were canbus friendly. One bulb worked at the weekend which is strange as none are coming on now. They are simply plug and play but the separate chassis ground of the earth wire may be worth trying but I'll speak to them first. I was just trying to find out if anyone had experienced similar problems on this model year with DRL's etc.

I have my canbus kit for over 2 years now.

Just use a piece o wire from kit plug and toutch the chassis.

What model year is your car Alberg?

2010 Facelift 1.6TDI model

OK, did you have a similar non-working problem before you ran in a separate earth?

Buy a non-canbus set and find someone in Scotia with VCDS to code the car correctly instead. ;)

No, but if they work properly direct from battery they should also work from plug.

Not on FL model, not that I know of

Try their terminator kit.

That is the only set all of us at the SCN forums could get to work properly. About 5-10 people all have them working perfectly now.

Exactly what I did on my 2010 FL

Fitted them January 2011. Not a problem with them

Given that the "CANBus friendly" kits have resistors in them to fool the CANBus into thinking that the bulb is ok: what happens when a HID actually fails? Does the system throw up an error, or does the resistor over-ride that?

I'm on my 5th body control module in 9 months, thanks to HID's.

Definitely should have gotten factory ones!!

And I bet they were all canbus kits

Nope!

Opposite, actually. :S

All were 35W non-canbus.

Have 2 friends that also had the same issue with non can-bus kits.

Yes it does, same goes for sidelight leds and rear plate leds, DRL leds

@alberg- How did they get around it?

One of my ballasts has blown, so its yet again time to grab a new one.

Any specific one which would work??

Called them this morning and this is the Kit they've recommended so I'll return mine back. A bit annoying having stripped out the headlights twice and fitted and removed ballast units. They did say they have the same Canbus Pro kit fitted on a Leon and 2010 Fabia VRS with no problems. They are confident this Terminator kit will work.

The cars were still under worranty, stripped everything down and went to shop

See this, my kit is the same as linked to on post nº3,

http://www.briskoda....it#entry2849752

actually my dad on his toyota verso, friends Fabia and other 2 fellows have the same kit.

People here also had issues on the Fabias, even the older models. My friend has is also for almost 2 years and no issues.

I have the ground direct to chassis. Twice with headlights, at night, when sprayed the windshield they flickered.

VCDS showed error, after negative direct to ground never again
