Weird lake of water

Featured Replies

Hi All,

My 2004 Fabia 1.9 TDI has developed a strange problem. A pool of water develops in the rear passenger side footwell.

Because the car is parked on a slant (passenger side slightly higher than driver's side), I thought it may be creeping in because it can't drain properly around the rear door.

But it dried out during the warm spell, and after rain, it's wet again. But the carpet is dry near the door.

The pollen filter (under the glove compartment, passenger side) also leaks water if it pours down. Any ideas? Obviously, it's worrying :)

Any help very gratefully recieved.

It's a common fault on your car and MKiv Golfs.

If you do a search on here you'll find a thread on it.

If not go to MKIV golf uk site.

Clear the skuttle drains under the wind screen. Should solve the pollen filter leaking.

Hope this helps

As ^ said clear scuttle drains. There is a heater duct to the rear footwells. If the scuttle fills with water then it can end up in the rear footwells via the heater.

Also check your door seals very carefully on the rear door. Mine did the same and there was the slightest detachment on the seal from the frame, which was missed my myself and two other garages.

Sounds like a leaking door carrier seal: http://www.fabia-vrs.com/technical-info/door-carrier-repair/. Once it's rained, you should see some "beads" of water just below the door card.

Adding a plastic barrier between the bottom of the door and the body (e.g. a bin bag) should work as a temporary fix. If you have access to a VAX-type vacuum cleaner/carpet cleaner, it can be used to suck the water out of the carpet. Failing that, newspaper will wick the water out of the carpet.

Sounds like the plenum chamber is full of leaves, etc, and needs cleaning (also worth removing and checking the pollen filter - it's under/behind the glove-box - if you lay on your back in the passenger's footwell, you should be able to see it on the radio side).
