VRs TDI Lumpy running at Steady Throttle

Featured Replies

Hello havent had a problem for a while but this one has got me wondering.

It happened immediatly after i did my own oil change on my drive a couple weeks ago, i used genuine filters and Longlife 3 oil.

Started the car and drove it round my street and noticed it was hesitant on pulling through the rev range, maybe a little low on power too, i was worried i had over filled with new oil but i had a half litre left in my 5 litre oil bottle and dipstick read max but its hard to read accurately. Once i had returned to my house i dipped the clutch to roll into the drive and noticed the revs had settled at 1000rpm, this then made me think it was the dpf doing an active regen so i reversed and went for a long drive in 4th at 2500rpm for 20 mins, on the way home it was evident the car was back to normal, smooth throttle response, quieter engine and idle smooth and at normal rpm.

So is this just the dpf dog bitting me in the behind. Never noticed it since i have owned the car 5000 miles ago, now im getting this every odd week and tonight!

Certainly didnt notice before the injector recall or oil change.

Your idle raising from 750rpm to 1,000rpm is 100% the DPF.

Every other week appears to be a bit excessive for a regen, it may be happening so often due to a regen cycle never actually having time to complete. If the cycle starts by some predetermined values in the ECU then it is interupted, it will start again at the next suitable opportunity. Once again if this is interupted it will go thru the same process. Hopefully your long run has forced a regen to complete and emptied the DPF, but alot of DPF's become knackered due to the cycle not being allowed to complete and eventully just filling up with soot. As the DPF beomes older and after lots of regen cycles it can become full of ash which cannot be removed by a burn cycle.

If it was a petrol turbo, I'd suggest looking at the oil cap / rocker cover seal, and PCV; but am not sure if the diesel is designed the same way.

Ok happened again today 8.9 miles since i reset the odometer from its last regen.

I went for a 20 min drive in 4th gear at 50 mph and a few blasts as well.

Not sure about this, there must be something wrong.

On to my oil levels, i cant read it past the max mark so not sure how over filled it is but how much does it take to cause problems, can too much oil be causing the dpf to soot up excessively?

Yes it can.

My injectors weren't fitted correctly (recall) which caused diesel fuel to mix with the engine oil (and raise the level well above max).

Ever sine then I've suffered DPF issues. Coincidence? Who knows!

I drove from York to London this morning, 70-80mph all the way for 3.5 hours.

Minding my own business and the DPF light comes on with a message to follow the instructions in the manual to clear it. At 80mph and 2,500rpm I already was! Anyway I dropped it into 4th and it disappeared after a mile or so.

When my DPF is attempting to regen the car drives very different, a rough idle and an increased rpm changes the relationship between the accelerator and the clutch which makes it a mare to drive smoothly!

Should i look at getting the oil checked for signs of diesel in it. Who would be able to do that

the dpf regen consists of

closing the ASV valve to draw gass thru the egr this will restric airflow to the engine

egr opens

and injection is set to fire ATDC (overfuel) all this leads the engine and dpf to get very hot
