Why is there hardly any 3G Tablets?

Featured Replies

I fancy a 3G tablet, I haven’t got access to wi-fi unless I'm at home and I don't want to tether it to my mobile. However the only new ones I can find are the iPad and Galaxy Tab. I'm not a fan of Apple but the spec of the Samsung is underwhelming to say the least. I could wait for the Nexus 7 3G but SWMBO has a wi-fi one and I don’t think 2 is necessary.

Do I swallow my pride and go for the iPad, what’s your thoughts.

because 3G chips are relatively expensive, and the only part of the non-Apple market that is selling is the budget Pad section, where margins are squeezed and things have to be left out.

If I ever get round to buying a pad, lack of 3G wont worry me as I have a 3G MiFi unit, but with 4G just around the corner anyway..........

You don't think 2 Nexus 7s is necessary, but you're happy to pay twice the amount to get an iPad just because it's not a(nother) Nexus 7? Your reasoning makes no sense; if the N7 is an otherwise good device then just buy the 3G version of that. Or sell your partner's and replace it with a single 3G N7 for the both of you. Personally it sounds to me like you want an iPad, but you want us to justify it for you so as not to get in trouble with 'er indoors ;)

said it all really.

motorola xoom 3g - works really well for me, but tbh I hardly ever use the 3g part, I just use the wi fi to connect to my phone

iPad, every time

iPad, every time

On the other hand you might want to actually try out all the options before you spend your hard earned cash

I had the title as something else and changed it, I should have read it back! Sorry sir.

It’s bit of having 2 of the same and there is also the size; I'd like something a bit bigger hence the Galaxy tab option.

I don't want anyone to justify it; it's more if anyone knows if there is an alternative. I like the Notion Ink Adam but its "old" compared the 2 above.

I will say again then.... Motorola zoom 3g. I'm using it to type this and it is running android jelly bean. Because it is "old" I expect you could find one for a relatively good price too.

IPad......No contest!

I'd go with the zoom, work mate has one and it's more flexible than the iPad this is being typed on.

Interesting, in what ways? I have the zoom but not the ipad but I chose on the basis of already having an android phone so wanted to use my existing apps. Would be interesting to hear your comparison

I went for the iPad because I have lots of iOS apps. I went for the cellular version to get the GPS chip which the wifi one doesn't have.

No regrets. Use it for work as well, so can claim part as a business expense.

I have used the 3G part occasionally, as I have a pay as you use sim from Orange. I also tether to the iPhone if service isn't great.

I love the big screen of the new iPad, It really is great.

The zoom also has a screen and I find it handy too.

Also came with a bluetooth keyboard and mouse which I use occasionally

Realistically as long as you can tether there probably isn't much need for a 3G tablet, I got myself an iPad yesterday but only went for wifi, as for the few times I'd need to use it on 3G, I can just tether to my iPhone. However what I'm wondering is that since you can get the 30pin to USB adaptors, whether it'd be possible to plug in a mobile dongle in?

Unless you want the GPS chip which is only in the cellular version......

How does mine still pick up gps then? That's a new one on me...magic :p

By wifi location, probably. When Google were doing street view, they also took account of visible wifi hotspots for rough locations. For example, if you're driving round with your iPad and it can see:

melanie

barrymore

sixtous

SKY0EC72

Then it knows you're pretty much on my road, as that would probably be the only place in the UK where those 4 networks are within a confined space.

Why no 3G tablets?

They sell in tiny numbers compared to wifi ones. Mostly people will buy a wifi tablet and then tether it to their phone for 3G access rather than have a separate data contract for the tablet.

So, no demand = they stop making them.

Also, if you want an Apple alternative, wait until the Windows 8 tablets appear next month and try one out. I've seen how it all works and Apple will need to take note IMO, it was really rather impressive.

Quite a few Android tablets will accept an external 3g dongle though... I'm currently looking at the Ployer Momo 11 Bird or Speed
