Mk2 Jetta Gti 16v - Vr6 Convertion

Featured Replies

Thought i would continue the link in here, as you will see from my 'Hi Again' post i had the engine in and still had more to do.

http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/243878-hi-again/

It has moved on since then:

Its in. It runs. and all the electrics work.

I managed to Keep the dash and clocks all the same thanks to a little help off one of the Wireing guys from E38

I will let the pics do the talking.

All inside the cabin is now back together, the mk2 clocks are Fully functional with the Vr6 lump, With the car being an 88 it had the earlyer style loom, What they Call Central Electrics 1, The later mk2 and all mk3 golfs have CE2 setups, most people just convert the car to CE2 and use the mk3 clocks, move the hazard switch to the coloumn and use mk3 stalks, i wasnt keen on this idea so after about 4 weeks of work i managed to convert the VR6 engine loom to plug and play into the Fusebox in the car, Apon doing this i have managed to keep the original switches, stalks and hazard location on the dash keeping it looking like a mk2. The Mk2 rev counter works too with some magic (well some resistors and some wire)

The ECU is hidden behind the Glovebox, so its out of the wet as i couldent get it into the location of the old mk2 one :)

Mk3 manifold and Decat is plumbed up to the Mk2 16v zorst. so we are looking std there too.

Thats a mk3 rad with the mk3 fans cut to fit, its VERY tight but its in!

I used to have a BIG 9L washer bottle so have gone to the other extreme by installing a Classic mini washer bottle

Ended up Keeping the mk2 pedal box and use official Seat parts for the cable convertion, you can tell its a cable clutch, so might consider swapping to hydro at a later date but it reduced the work involved getting it done.

Now has a mk2 gold PAS rack fitted up, G60 ARB (will be upgrading to Even larger at a later date)

Mk1 TT wishbone bushes in the mk2 narrowtrack wishbones, Kept the Car Narrow track 4 stud so from the outside the keen eyes will be fooled.

Just got G60 280mm brakes to go on change the rear calipers and im ready for the MOT.

All this work has been done single handedly, I have had NO help with this convertion, the only time another pair of hands have been involved to do this is when the guys came to buy the old engine, they brought a crane and took it out the bay and away.

There is only going to be 2 more this which i think may need a second pair of hands to finish it:

- Press new bearings in - Mate will do that at his garage

- Bleed the breaks through - Old scool styley

Thinking of getting a little sticker somewhere for it just with my name on it as i feel quite proud i have done it all on my own.

Not many plans after this is done, Thinking of having a bit of bodywork tidy (prefer the 'Used' look though) might fit some bags as you dont see many mk2's on air. and just drive it and enjoy it really.

Need another bucket for the missus to keep her happy in in her seat.

Just waiting for payday so i can get the front breaks back together and replace the rear calipers and i should be ready for MOT time.

Well i think i on the home strech......

Small list of stuff to do: Parts waiting at home/in the post.

- New Driveshafts = at home Waiting to get fitted

- Hubs Discs and NEW wheel bearings = waiting for my mate to be able to press them in

- Track Rod ends = in the post

- Ball joints = in the post

- New Rear calipers = in the post

- Front Pads = Need to do a bit of shopping to find them at a good price

I THINK when this is all on the car is ready for the MOT.

Little unsure on how to play this as i was going to scrap the golf as soon as the jetta is done, So in 2 minds to ither:

Get the car to the garage for MOT/Fix little bits, While its in sort my insurance and tax then drive it home.

Get it lifted to the garage, MOT it, Get it lifted back do the little odds and sods to tidy it up then sort the insurace and tax a little later...

I would rather the second as there are a few things i would like to get out the way before i drive it but i get really impaitent when im at this stage of a car

LIKE! :)

Thats it.... Everything is ordered up and/or recived....

Just gotta put the Brakes back together

Hubs back on (with new track rod ends and ball joints)

Front brakes together

Rear caliper replacement

Pads all round

Bleed then time for the MOT :whew:

First attempt at a project like this and its almost complete..... mummy im scared...

But once its done the feeling that you've done it will be worth while.

Much more pleasing than paying to get someone else to do it.

Good work :)

Typical late night working on the car.

20120927_214319.jpg

Still got to put the passenger side back together tonight, make sure everything is nice and tight, get the brakes on and bleed them through then its about time for MOT.......

Dont worry guys i have thought about stoppers.... set of G60 280mm discs are going on.... i know that dosent seem too big to some of you octy guys with your 312mm+ but on a car of this weight they have plenty of stopping power.

Kudos to you. I hope it goes well and reflects all the effort which you've invested in it.

Looking good - hope it passes! Impressive to have done it entirely yourself too!

Might be of interest to you with brakes, but I did some tests, and found the G60s to be worse stoppers than the standard 256mm on my Polo!

0-60 stops, blanks are null results where I braked too soon, or was much too fast. 4piston setup used 280mm disks too.

Intresting.... was this done with a manual brake test (ie Foot), What 4 pots did you use?

I do know there is disc thickness between them too as the 256mm are only 20mm thick so less metal to cool and the 280mm are 22mm thick which means more metal to absorb heat.

Anything is an improvement over the 239mm the car is currently running..... and the hub change over has opened up a world of more brake choises.... Wilwood do a very nice 4Pot setup on the 256 and 280.

Things didnt go according to plan over the weekend getting the front brakes together:

For some reason the drivers side caliper fitting of the hose is recessed so managed to get the hose off but the fitting is stuck in the caliper! Have emailed goodridge to see if they can supply the fitting only but if not it means I'm going to have to get a whole new set! Ffs I hate brakes and delays..........

Oh yea on the plus side, did some dodgy dealing in Bluewater car park:

20120929_162606.jpg

16x9, With an ET of 15.

I had a set of these on the car before but sold them as jsut saw them as spare cash.... the last set were not the best, they where full of white worm, these are 100x better and have the Flat caps too so tick more boxes for me.

The tyers have a little more stretch than a like 205/40/16 on the 9J rim but they will get me through the MOT for when i can get some more.

Borbet A's ftw.

These fetch a premium nowadays aswell as looking the danglies :)

Look forward to fitted pics.

Manual. Same piece of road with roughly the same temperatures too (and same tyres and brand of disks/pads). There's a sign where it goes from a 60-30 limit and I'd hit the brakes with that as a marker. No attempt to modulate, just leaving the ABS to stop the car.

239? Wow! I assumed they were 256's to start with, sorry. Mine were a set of 'HiSpec Motorsport' ones, so I doubt as good as a Wilwood setup etc. Got them cheap off of ClubPolo :)

Yea i thought that when i bought the car too..... but with it being a pre90 Gti 16v it got the 8v brakes which are a piddly 239mm.

Did pee me off a little but hey ho.... got some propper 16v hubs on it now so choices are endless!!

Gave the wheels a bit of shower last night as the inside was BLACK

20121001_195340.jpg

Little bit peed off as i went for these wheels as they had tyres but one of them has a nail in it  need to talk to my tyre man about repair.... bit consened as they are streched on and i dont know how i feel about taking it off the bead to repair then restrech back on the wheel.... not big a fan of strech but they came with good tyres.

your mrs must love you - cleaning wheels in the shower.. :giggle:
