Alloy care

Featured Replies

Hi, I have searched the forum, but can't see anything that covers this.

In the next few months we are going to be taking delivery of a new yeti and a citigo.

I was wondering if anyone has any views on wiping the alloys with a rag with 3 in one oil, so that a thin film is left on the wheel.

I was thinking this might make them easier to clean. Not sure if there would be any reaction with the dust from disc pads!

it will do the opposite and make them harder to clean. The brake dust will stick to the oil like glue, and scratch the wheels when you come to clean them. You'll need to use a harsh degreaser to clean the wheels, again not good.

Recommended route is to apply a good quality wax to the wheel, this helps protect against the brake dust but will also mean that unless its been left a while a simple wash with water will be enough to shift the dirt.

Better still..Sealer works FAR better on Alloys

I use Optimum Optiseal

Wheels stay cleaner longer and are a breeze to clean

There is a post a couple down about sitting in your backgarden with a beer and claying you alloys???

Simple one really. Clean with very mild car shampoo solution and completely dry off. Buy some wheel sealant such as poorboys wheel sealant, chemical guy's wheel guard or similar and apply a thin coating. Buff off when dry. There are lots of alternatives. Wheels will be easily cleaned with same mild shampoo solution in the future.

Do you need to take the tyres off to apply sealants? Would make it a much harder job.

Was just thinking about sealant chemicals attacking the rubber, especially if you use a sealant not designed specifically for car wheels.

Oh well, I didn't think it was that stupid a question!

I'll be doing mine in about a month when the winter wheels go on.

Just read the page you linked - all makes sense. Not sure about copperslipping the wheel nuts though (which is of course a whole different topic).

Copper slip on wheel bolts and on the face of the alloys stops your wheel from corroding onto the hub

Its all part of Alloy care

BTW..I know of no sealant that will degrade or damage tyres

Good luck
