Brake dust

Featured Replies

Any recommendations on a a cleaner/anti dust cleaner for my vRS wheels?

Do the standard pads emit a lot of dust? Only had it for 2 weeks and they are a bit of a mess

already. At least they are easy enough to clean, now dreading the winter!

I always use wonder wheels. The stuff is amazing. Got some products from skoda when i bought the car for free that protects the wheels and is supposed to make cleaning them easier. It certainly helps so far but i have only cleaned it once since i got it. Bloody hate cleaning cars. Total pointless excersise and a waste of time. Wonder wheels has always worked for me and my wheels are normally in a right state by the time they get cleaned.

Isn't wonder wheels acidic which will over time degrade the finish, if it is this product im thinking of doesnt it strip any protective sealant you might have

It certainly is acidic which is why i like it. Eats the dust. You are right though if i cleaned my car regularly i may not have any wheels left using wonder wheels all the time. Suits my lazy ass cleaning regime though.

O well your wheels, there are less aggressive cleaners available

Once you have them cleaned get them Waxed up & protected,

& then when you wash the car wash the wheels with the same non corrosive Car wash.

You will need to keep washing off Salt during the winter months anyway.

eg, Perfectly good to wash off your wheels once Waxed and protected.

Not too much in the Bucket.

£1.99

Black wheels is what i need. To hide the brake dust. Ince ive kerbed the **** out of mine ill refurb them in black i think. Sorted.

Kerbed wheels will allow the Wonder Wheels free roam under the laquer I'll give them months !!

Trust me on this I used WW and with a few months had great big chunks of wheel paint peeling off on the inside of the rim, that was the begining of the end of those wheels.

Im only half kidding im quite careful actually and like to keep my wheels damage free. I do hardly clean them though so wonder wheels is ace but i wouldnt recomend using it regularly. If you clean them regularly normal soapy water is normally sufficient.

So, soap and water then!!

Hi All

I have a set of steels for the winter and clean the alloys thoroughly when they are off the car (they get washed when I wash the car normally).

I also apply car polish to them before I store them in the garage. The polish helps make the brake dust easier to remove when I wash them when they are back on the car throughout the summer.

You can get covers that help keep the brake dust down but I don't know how good or visible they are when fitted.

Cheers

Dave

You said soap & water.

'Not Washing up liquid.' It contains Sodium/salt. So Corrisive,

Not Shampoo or Baby shampoo either.

repair any broken coating on Allow wheels, seal it very very soon afterwords.

& get the wheels off now and some Copper Slip behind them before Corrosion sets in behind the Alloys.

Or it might only be 6 months and you can not get them off.

These are the Fabia vRS alloys that get replaced under Warranty, when the y do not say 'User Error'.

This is the White Spider. Corrosion behind the Lacquer Coating.

If they're dreadful then try a decent wheel brush and muc off wheel cleaner.

If that doesn't get you anywhere use wonderwheels one wheel at a time, apply, wash it off, clean with a tiny amount of baking powder in water then with a general car shampoo/water.

Rinse very well and then once dry apply a good wheel wax/protector and just wash them weekly or so with a hose or car shampoo and water.

Don't as above use ww as more than a rare treatment to get rid of really stubborn stains/dust as it is aggressive.

I think ww now do a less acidic cleaner now mind in a different package.

That is 'Baking Soda',

google 'Baking Soda clean alloy wheels' maybe

Do not mix up with 'Caustic Soda',

big trouble in little China with that & alloys.

george

Damn autocorrect.

If you use wonder wheels then it's a weak baking soda solution to neutralise the acid. Spray or brush on and then wash off after 30 seconds. It can be used alone, but it's not pH neutral either.

The winter is the only time my wheels are always clean and tidy as the road salt eats away at the brake dust, one flash with the jetwash lance and they look as good as new.

Another option is some collinite no845 insulator wax, clean the wheels first then layer the wax on, buff off and then they are prepped for months

The reason Wonder Wheels is very good at removing stuborn brake dust is because it is very, very aggressive.

I used WW regularly on my BMW wheels and it reacted badly with the laquer and they turned yellow!

When you consider that there are non-acidic wheel cleaners out there that are equally as effective as WW the stuff really needs banishing!

One good point though, the brush supplied with WW is very useful for applying tyre black!

Bilberry wheel cleaner, ph neutral and can be diluted depending on how dirty your wheels are. Wouldn't put wonder wheels anywhere near my wheels.
