Columbus Problem

Featured Replies

A quick question posted on behalf of Beth at Allams.

They have a problem with a Columbus in that when you turn it on the Skoda badge appears on the screen as it should but then disappears and the unit switches itself off.

Anyone had this problem and know of a fix? If so, please email 'bethc at allams.com' and/or post here.

Incidentally, it isn't TIBET II with the problem - all is absolutely splendid with the Tibetan Bronze monster. And you have to see this colour in the fur to really appreciate just how brilliant the colour is in various light. We like very much...

Hi aerofurb,

I have only had my Yeti two days, so not quite up to speed on the Columbus yet. When I switch mine on I get the Skoda badge, which goes off after a few seconds, but also the radio comes on. I have to turn the volume down to zero, if I only want the navigation - I guess I'm doing something wrong. One thing I'm supprised at is the tiny time display, and that it has to be set manually! My wife's Peugeot 807 can have a large analogue clock as well as a digital one, but more important, it is set via the Sat Nav and therefore always exactly right!

Do you know what version your maps are? I think V8 is the latest, but that is quite old already. I drove to Builth Wells today and the Columbus took us across the fields instead of a new road which has been open for nearly a year! I will be upset if I have to pay for an upgrade after only having the car for a few months...

I wish I had gone for the Bronze Metalic I know it looks very distinctive. It was not available when I ordered, but could have changed my mine later down the long wait.

Peter,

even Garmin haven't caught up with that new road yet!!

How about the 3 finger salute, control+alt + del

Failing that try the < + > + the speech button.

That will force a soft reset.

By the way, I'm only aware of Skoda having issued v7.2 I think maps. They are way behind VW for some unknown reason

Peter, you are not doing anything wrong, but there are settings under the TONE button which sets the volume of various things, including the radio, on start-up. The radio or media are active and "on" while navigating. If you turn the volume down to zero, then you only get the nav announcements and any special radio traffic warnings.

Thanks Agerbundsen, I'll try that tomorrow. I have "moved" the speaker balance in the TONE setting.

Some of the slides have both a minimum volume and a volume slide - I haven't figgered out what the Dickens the minimum volume does.

Columbus unit in my Superb started doing something similar a couple of months back. Unit would power on, show the splash screen, switch off and repeat. Diagnosis was a dead Columbus. Hope this isn't the case here.

On the whole I am really pleased with the Columbus unit but I find it very frustrating that you cannot set it to mute the sounds apart from navigation instructions. I know it's no great effort to turn the volume right down if you want peace and quiet but at the price you pay for Columbus I would expect something better. There doesn't seem to be an answer to this: I had a Columbus in my previous Octy Scout and asked the dealer about this: he was unable to confirm that muting is possible.
