Having a new cat back system fitted on Tuesday to my Estate VRS 2.0FSi - improvemants to fuel consumption, bhp & torque figures appear well worth the cost outlay, anyone else had one fitted?

Welcome to the forum.

Been watching Wheeler Dealers?

Lets us know how it goes.

Can i enquire what that is going to set you back!

I know of someone else that is looking to get one,

different car tho.

Yeah they're not gonna happen I'm afraid.

Yeh, maybe so regarding Vortex claims but fancy a new sound and I'm sure there will be some improvement!! Thanks for the welcome lads - will post the results soon!!!!!

As for costs, full system is £500+ - not cheap.

Have you seen the Jetex 3" cat back which is £274? A few of us have this system now.

I like the Vortex disclaimer

Cat back systems have been proven to give virtually no performance improvement on this car, so don't expect any or you'll be disappointed. Performance comes from a Downpipe upgrade when a software upgrade is added.

Well they are probably covering all angles regarding web site info - I'm certain that any system that removes exhaust gases quickly and lowers back pressure will achieve performance improvements. I will look into the Jetex 3 system though - thanks for this.

But the back pressure is from the restricted down pipe and cat so unless that's changed you won't gain much if any improvement

Hear what you are saying and I'm sure you are right, but if the vortex system causes a vacuum then it should expel the gases quicker from the cat, so in theory should show an improvement? - although whether it is anywhere near the figures quoted!

Cheers

Taff

But the standard cat back is not restrictive. Put it this way, I upgrade my turbo to the Audi S3 turbo and ran it with the stock cat back, I then bought the 3" cat back and felt zero improvement with it fitted. The sound is lots nicer but the car drives the same. There maybe a tad bit of extra power at high rpm but I couldn't tell driving the car.

Yep I think you are right - probably will sound nice but little actual performance increase that I personally could measure. I still think there will be some improvement from the vacuum affect though - maybe better throttle response? Thanks for your comments they are appreciated, will update you next week.

Don't forget that too little back pressure is just as bad as too much!

Well guys, I went ahead and got the Vortex fitted today - I did review the Jetex, but I put that down to just an exhaust box really. The whole experience was great, people were lovely and after a coffee met with the technician who was to custom build the system for me. I then agreed what sort of sound I would like and type of tail pipe finish etc. Takes about 4 hours but you do have a lounge area and large flat screen TV for passing the time!!

On completion, the technician (Melvyn) went through all of the installation process he carried out - very professional.

Sound was fantastic, low bass and nice purring when ticking over - well pleased!!

Upon driving away, I thought the car immediatley felt more throttle responsive, quicker and sounded superb - I will never be able to prove bhp improvements but I don't hammer my car anyway so I'm a happy Taff!!!

Expensive, but worth the money I would say - I actually found the 4 wheel alignment I also had done at the same time, a bit much at £50.00!!!

Did they have to do any adjustment?

If a proper 4 wheel alignment check

& then adjusted properly then its better than £25 @ Halfords & your tyres wearing anyway.

Yes they did adjust front toe-in so at the end of the day I'm happy my boots will run true!!!

So now you've got it what diameter is the main bore (not the tail pipe)? Also what makes it perform better than the other systems out there to justify the hefty price tag?

Personal choice, but I'd always go back to Longlife if I wanted a full exhaust system again. Can't rate them highly enough and it has a lifetime warranty from the moment it's fitted, a genuine one, not a con one where you need to have it inspected every year at a price! Proper stainless steel, custom made to fit the car, however you want it too.

Top banana! :)

Pipe bore size is standard - would that be 2.5"? I assume the difference from other systems is the patented Vortex mid box as this is where the vacuum is created. I agree some of the claims on bhp increase on various cars (which they had framed and scattered around their office) seem incredible, but surely that is quite easy to disprove?

The only problem I found with Longlife is that it is a franchise - so quality varies.

I had to go back 3 times to get my system right on a previous car - the Longlife in Leeds and Stockport were excellent, but other branches were not so good ..............

^^^ very true, same as powerflow.

I suppose standard bore is ok if your not going big power, is there any info or diagrams on the "patented" mid box"? To me it sounds like a con but if you're happy that's great :)

I don't think it's a con as there is too much written up about it - take a look at their website which details the 'Vortex' system - www.vortex-performance-exhausts.co.uk

Their animations look exactly the same as how my Jetex looks when you look through it, absolutely nothing new at all. I'm sorry but it's complete rubbish, search the net or better still get it on a reputable dyno, you should get at least a 10% gain according to the site.

Sorry for the rant but it makes me mad with absurd claims like this:

VW Golf 1.8T- before bhp- 150, after bhp- 225

:wonder:

^^^ very true, same as powerflow.

I've seen some absolutely shocking cases of rust with Powerflow oin the ClubGTI forum from when I had my golf. Dunno if it's still the case, but they used to use a substandard type of steel which would rust quickly despite them saying it wouldn't, and then they'd tend to say it was something the customer had done in their driving.

Well I'm glad you got that out of your system - wish I'd never started this thread now, only wanted to share my experience. Would be very funny though if their claims are correct though - ho ho loser!!
