DIY Air conditioning service kits

Featured Replies

I think there is more to servicing the system than that kit allows for. This site - chosen at random from Google - explains what is involved and includes this safety warning:

Please note that all A/C systems contain potentially harmful CFC or HFC gases under very high pressures. Exposure to the refrigerant can cause cold burns and blindness. Additionally, deliberate release of refrigerant is a criminal offence with penalties of up to 5 years imprisonment with an unlimited fine.

The only safe way to maintain your system is through an annual service by a trained and qualified A/C technician using specialised equipment. Whatever you do, don

i have a wet smell after using my AC is that because the filters ares messed up?

i think thats the water just building up on the air con unit

I noticed these kits in Halfrauds last weekend and must admit to have hung my nose over them longer than is necessary. I took the opinion that it's best left to those that know.

so, is there a solution to my problem or is it just normal

What you will find after using you air con is there is a build up of condensation on the compressor, this in turn allows bacteria to grown on it leaving an odour of wet or smelly socks when you turn it on next. To get rid of this Commer do a can of cleaner that you release in the car that kills off the bacteria. It's like letting off a small gas grenade in the car (PS you need to be out the car when this is going of ;) ).

I have heard some people say they can usually eliminate the bacteria by turning their air con off and turning up the heater to evaporate the condensation, but who does this on a hot day I don't know

There is a product called Commer Air-Con cleaner (I think that's how it's spelt) you can get from most motor factor shops like Halfords. It is a little can that you place in the passenger foot well facing up towards the interior aircon intake. You then start the aircon going and realease the contents of this can, it sprays for a few minutes and basically realeases clean into the aircon unit. When you do this you need the engine running all the windows and doors closed and you out of the car.

ok i got it now, thanks for the explanation.

could somebody please confirm the name of that product (and if by any chance you find a link to buy it or a picture of it... it will be well welcomed :-)

thanks !!

How do you release the contents of the can if you're outside the car with the doors/wondows closed ? ;)

In my former career in the RN, an aspect of my job was as a refrigeration and air con engineer and as such I had to do a course on refrigerant handling. Part of the course was a dire warning that if I allowed ANY refrigerant to leak into the atmosphere during the course of my duties then I would be liable to a fine of up to

The domestic fridge mountains are caused by the wait for the fridge man to come and evacuate the refrigerant. Plus due to the fact that the insulation is expanded by the use of CFCs they are not allowed to crush them once the refrigerant is removed unless it is in a sealed building.

I would imagine that scrapyards are supposed to evacuate any refrigerant as well, and as for crashes, not a lot you can do about that except put on the factor 50.
