Calls for 80 MPH on selected motorways...

Featured Replies

It certainly isn't meant to be a "I can park my car wherever I like" sticker.

But it's OK for them to do that, 'cos they'll only be a minute.

A minute my a##e! :orb_angry

Hmm... slightly off topic methinks, but would you want to leave your little one in a car park 200 yards from the shop you want to pop into? I've been done for a parking fine, even though I was in a space, but my bumper was over the line.

What has this to do with stickers though? In truth I don't really see the connection. Mums park as best they can - a sticker affords no protection against fines so affords no privileges.

Thanks for the heads up about why one should have a sticker. And re my earlier post, one of those red triangle things in the boot probably wouldn't go amiss for motorway drivers.

Compared to a lot of countries I have driven in/through the UK is so far by far the most dangerous. I've been to the Dominican Republic too, where the rule is basically that there are no rules and you just get out of the way of each other. That's a totally different system from here, admittedly, and it would get a lot of peeps killed in the UK or on the continent, for that matter :D

The real problem is lack of GOOD driving instructors. The concept of 'someone who as held a license for 3 years can teach a novice how to drive' is blatently stupid. I'm truly amazed dual control teaching of learners is STILL not required by law in the UK. Also no motorway driving, night driving or driving in the rain/foggy conditions.

The concept of turning fog lights ON and OFF at appropriate times, as well as having your headlights on when you turn on your window wipers (hint: that means visibility is NOT good, i.e. turn the blithers on) rather than your side lights (hint: they are USELESS) seems to be something that is a rare thing to see. I've seen driving instructors turn OFF their lights when they should be on.

My approach to driving has changed to be far, far more defensive and far more 'look-ahead and attempt to see the danger and dumb@rses who will pull out without looking'. I may be getting the latter part wrong sometimes and back off a bit too much but I'd rather do that then kill someone or myself.

Back on the speed limit on motorways topic ;) - weather-based limits make sense when electronic signs are used. Police officers have a level of discretion and they can tell if you are being totally irresponsible or 'just' going fast.

I feel safer behind someone who goes at >70mph but keeps his/her distance, indicates and steers properly, then behind someone doing 50 mph on the same road who cannot stay in lane, is faffing about with their mobile, their CDs, makeup, reading the paper. I see those things happen daily and as far as I am concerned they are driving a 50mph 1 tonne metal hammer, waiting to crash into someone when the traffic suddenly slams to a standstill. The person who's focussed on the driving will stop, whether he/she was speeding or not, whereas the other person will do 50mph and wait for 5-10 seconds before noticing the stopped traffic, by which time you'll have a crash.

Grrin. Don't even get me started about the income part of it ;)

The worst offenders are the half HGV's which obviously arent restricted - I was surprised to see a Royal Mail truck steady cruising at 75-80MPH the other day... That truck would take a decade to stop if it had to.

Also van drivers - those new Merc vans can shift' date=' anything upto 90ish. This coupled with the teenager behind the wheel is dangerous to say the least.

I agree with the good comments already made - the limit should be related to size of vehicle, road conditions and amount of traffic.

I followed a Royal Mail van at about 7am on the M74 going to Birmingham. I was doing the I will avoid getting caught by D+G Cameras prescribed 83 mph and was making no progress on this Royal Mail van! Kept me awake anyway!

Oh and surprise surprise the Royal Mail is putting the mail back onto the trains after removing it and closing of all the depot because it wasn't cost effective it is now because of fuel prices! Bunch of muppets
