Anyone made their own mufflerectomy?

Featured Replies

As per title.

Im looking for dimensions/tips/advice on perhaps making one (or at least my friend is). Local places are just a little silly on the asking price personally.

On the other hand if anyone is selling one let me know haha. Im happy to not venture this project for the sake of convenience.

So after some thinking.....

Flexi piping, flanged clamp on bit of SS, 2 adjustable bracket hooks and a exhaust tip (plus a good length of SS) = universal mufflerectomy?

Surely its not that simple otherwise people would made them already. Right?

Been thinking about this too, for a good job I think you'll need welding gear.

Yes, friend can weld. But doesn't know how to bend stainless steel pipes.

On my ibiza fr, im thinking of just cutting the backbox off, cutting the tip off, welding a peice of pipe where the other piece of backbox would go, then welding the tip on the bit of pipe.

Hopfully look like the standard car but sound abit better.

I knew a guy who did this, he kept the back box but opened it up with a grinder, then he simply joined the inlet pipe to the tail pipe with flexi pipe and then re welded the top back onto the original back box, his idea was to keep thing looking stock for MOT or if the establishment were to stop him and improve to exhaust note.

I made my own even welded using two car batteries and welding rods. Got a cheap tip off ebay to finish it off.

I just used 2.25 inch stainless pipe to replace from backbox section.

To bend pipe takes a little messing unless you got blow torch. Easiest way is to fill pipe with damp sand and use a vice.

Sorry to hi jack the thread, I have one for sale, pm me if interested

Blow torch, damp sand and a vice you say? Hmm.. Interesting. :) Is it that easy?

Ideally I'd want a 2.5" bore but I guess cut slits and clamp on rest of piping wouldn't be too difficult.

Think its looking more achievable now.

Dont really need blow torch just makes it easier. Damp sand just keeps shape of tube else it will kink aa you bend it using vice.

So a small update I suppose, I plans still going forward after ringing another local who wanted £95 for the work (with own tip supplied!).

I found some links as picture aids, im sure it'll be useful for others who want to give it a try too:

What is strange is that some have it kinked some have it straight, but I guess it depends how you weld the hangers etc.

Well as my 'rig' before welding happens im going to use some D-clamps and these clever metal cable ties. Hopefully they should hold for now until the friend is free for welding.

Got some anti resonance padding in it which i have no idea what that does.. (it has Custom Chrome Racing etched onto it :) )

If this works and is a perfect fit, you should do a group buy :) I'd be up for one

Ha noo.. Sorry im not proficient at big boys stuff like welding and bending lol . Friend is help me out if he has time. Im doing it because they like to rip you a new one in surrey/sussex.

Materials aren't too bad though for cost. £20 (£12 for pipe £7 for postage) for 1m SS, would only need i'd say max 50cm. tailpipe (from £10-50, usually about £25), 2 clamps and weld on hangers £10?

Im sure it can be had cheaper if you know the people or local to custom exhaust places.

I picked up the tip from the bay for a good price, was originally £57 as its branded (remember cherry bomb exhausts?)

So I fitted it today, initial views - little disappointed with the amount noise it gave. Perhaps its because the tip is an anti resonance tip. Notes were there but still little tame. Beefed up the induction noise though and it seems like the pick up is a little better. I can hear the turbo spinning up now. I may look for another tip thats not "anti resonating".

Btw mines hanging slightly low angle (i.e. slightly pointing downwards). I'll give another adjustment in the morning with the cable ties to see if i can get it sitting perfectly horizontal. Has anyone has this issue?

Pictures will come tomorrow :)

Edit: When I mean noise i was expecting loudness but it was quite subtle/sociable.

did you not start the car with no backbox on at all?

Would have been the first thing i would do, if only to check what the noise would be like with a straight through backbox.

Im just going to cut my backbox off, open it up, remove everything inside then refit, might be pointless but you never know!

Mines quite loud, it's 2.5 inch going through to twin 2.5 inch tips. I do sometimes wish it was a little louder but that would mean a de-cat but I'm already remapped and I can't get a sodding answer out of shark whether its safe or not! :@

Was too busy trying to make it fit with cable ties (as the tail pipe was pretty beefy), didnt manage to try it out without the tail pipe. I'll give it a go next week sometime to see. I may end up drilling/modifying the anti resonator walls. Surely an open ended 6x4 cone will make it louder..

Edit: I heard it wasn't a good thing to decat with std turbo but thats from only reading here.

Edit 2: Come to think of it, I've never had a "low noted" exhaust, maybe thats why im thinking its quiet. When it gets above 2.5k it seems to sound more tame (more engine less exhaust) which is kind of the opposite from what everyone else says. A video is in order it seems..

Why don't you cut the cat out and weld in a pipe, that will make it louder :)

Fair play JL, hat off sir!

Thanks, though being a complete beginner on metal work its really not that bad.

So I've driven on the m/way and all sorts of roads today, there is a very minor increase of drone but that's most likely me being picky again. I have noticed the boost gauge pressure drops and rises quicker than before. Not sure what that means. Power wise I don't think there's a difference. pics and vid tomorrow, bit busy today..

Edit:

Its on now anyway, what i need to do is probably put a kink in the middle of that pipe and put hangers on to pull it down slightly to make it sit horizontal.

Just an update, the sound is a bit beasty! only at certain times and throttles though, I think the anti resonance tip helps suppress it at higher rev ranges.

There is increased drone on the m/way, doesn't kick in until around 2k which is nice.

No owl noises, bird whistles or chicken clucking..

If I find a way to video the noise without hanging the phone outside I'll upload it and share it with all.

Looks to be pointing down at an angle though..

Mine was the same originally, until I shaped it and welded it so it came out at the correct angle.
