filling diesel and the nozzle shuts off prematurely

Featured Replies

Dear all,

Is it just me or it happens to everyone that when I'm filling my diesel superb, sometimes the fuel nozzle cuts off way too early. For example I only had a half tank (not just the fuel gauge showed, but also the fuel economy and the miles I did on that half tank make perfect sense), the nozzle "clicked" at 20 Litre.

This happened at several different fuel stations.

I'm wondering, is it possible the nozzle was too deep in? That's not possible, right?

Back few months ago when trying to fill the car for the first time, I was worrying about the opposite as the Superb's fuel hole is almost invisible under low light condition compared to other cars that I've owned.

Or can this be diesel foaming?

Thanks.

might be the vent pipe that is blocked if it does it often they have a small pipe that vents the air in the empty tank out when you put the fuel in

Mine clicks instantly if the fuel nozzle is pushed in like you would normally do. Only works ok if inserted a couple of inches in.

This topic is ripe for double entendres ;)

Yep mine to. Stick it all the way in and 'click'. Stick it a little way and 'Bob's your uncle'.

Try inserting the nozzle fully then turn the handle to the left so that it's at 9 o'clock.

Thanks everyone!

Good to know it's not my fault. Will try this week!

This also happens on my car with certain pumps.

Usually turning it to the side or pulling it out a bit (ooooh eeer missus) helps.

Think some of them are over sensitive.

Diesel is generating some foam when its beeing filled up in the car, I'm just waiting a couple of seconds and its possible to fill up again...

Atleast in Sweden it is... It because of the high amount of paraffin in diesel

nozzle upside-down worked well with my Chrysler PT Cruiser back in the day...

The "turning to the side" works generally.

However today in a Sainsbury fuel station, it's dreadful... Turning to the side, upside down, pulling out a bit, waiting for 3-4 seconds, none of them worked... In the end the last 5 to 8 litres of diesel just refused to go in. Gave up...

Yes, mine does it too. Pull it out a bit. That's what fixes mine. Now I'm in the habit of not fully pushing it in, it fills no problem.

Fnarr Fnarr.

But true!

Also ensure that the ignition/engine is off while filling. I found that to be the root cause of this issue.

Mine does this aswell. Not quite so much of late though, was beginning to wonder if it is somewhat temperature related?

Withdrawing slightly helps. As they say, long and thin too far in, short and thick does the trick.

I've not had any issues with mine shutting off early when filling, but when it does shut off, I always end up with a small pool of diesel in the bottom of the filler area. I guess it's coming out the vent but it does my head in. Especially if there arn't any paper towels in the garage!! Never had this with my Octy's Vrs and I guess it's the same filling system!

There is no venting into the filler area, any fuel in the bottom of this area can only come from the filler neck or nozzle. Any fuel in this area should drain out of the drain tube in the bottom. It is small and could get blocked just pull it up and out to check. I have lengthened mine as I did once spill fuel into bottom and it smelled of diesel for a couple of days, the tube does not clear the back of the inner wing so fuel coats the surface, add about 4" and it will drain onto the ground.

Never had my engine on when filling ever... Always lock the car before dash to the koisk...

I think this is a design flaw TBH...

I have had the same problem, and turned the handle to the 10-11 o'clock position to fix it.

Mine has the same issue and if I stick the filler pistol more that 50% in, I have difficulties to get it out again.

In the beginning I found it a bit annoying, but now I am just used to it - just like I feel the tank is 10 liters too small for the car.
