I get in quite a few DSG now that are jerky & it can be the same driving my own after some one else has driven them.

Even in the morning after i have thrashed it myself and then parking up, it can be jerky.

Thats where the boxes memory needs a little time to re-adjust.

What automatic gearboxes have you been driving recently or on modern cars that are jerky in town?

Last really bad one i drove was a Smart Diesel

& a C2 Citroen Diesel Sensodrive demonstrator that was just dangerous.

(it was a early one and they were fitting Stop/Start for the first time.)

Must say i have only been able to drive Autos since 1977, and try to drive any that i can.

I had a shot in a bmw with the smg box. Was really bad when driving slowly. The car was fast as hell and the gearbox was fine when gunning it but i would imagine the jerky characteristics would get irritating if you owned one. I have had 2 dsg boxes and both have been super smooth. Hve had a few torque convertors and they too were silky smooth. I havent owned a car myself with a single clutch auto box so am only assuming they are all jerky as the BMW certainly was and generally the motoring press seem to think the same about the rest of them.

Back on topic. I want one. Having driven an XK, the howl of a 5.0 litre V8 is just amazing and it went like stink even with its autobox. And I'm glad it had one, because like George, I've no choice and it pleases me greatly that more and more are coming with them. My vRS isn't jerky, but maybe its 25+ years plus of driving an auto and adapting to suit their ways of working. The manual does give advice on how to drive the dsg so that it's not but maybe people don't rtfm.

The 'motoring press' never seem to like Automatics and never have. Changing a bit now.

Do they ever like something that is just transport, cheap or not manly.

(Then you sometimes get to see what they actually drive or buy with their own money)

Lots of people need Automatics & buy them,

As to a BMW with a jerky SMG, i suggest it was faulty or stiil working as to the previous drivers style.

Good thing is if you do not like something you never need to have it.

That will be striking the Jaguar off many peoples wish list. or maybe not.

This was the point i was originally making. The public do want autos thats why new cars like this jag and most porche 911's now come with them. A lot of people moan about autos as they prfer the feel of a manual, but what they forget to realise is that they are in the minority. Porche have established this purely through the number of PDK boxes ticked in the options list hence why they will probably cease to offer a manual box in the near future because its stupid to cater to the minority. I guarantee the vast majority of potential jag owners want an auto so why should jag spend more money to offer something that wont be popular.

THe Motoring Press & Motoring Journalists sometimes need to stand back and think,

or tell it like it is for someone buying with their own money.

eg Top Gear Magazine , no 235, page 81

Short review on 'Porsche Boxster 2.7'

"Which means the least powerful engine, with the least expensive manual six-speed gearbox, and passive or standard systems operating on the rest.

And might be the best version.

Yes, the PDK is brilliant, but there's something satisfying about getting a change perfect from the slightly notchy manual."

? Always wonder if thats what they would say if they bought it with their money ( £37,589) and it had that 'slightly notchy manual'.?

lol, probably !
