Jaguar F type

Featured Replies

I like it.

Yum yum, yes please :)

Love the look of the thing and the engine range, but why no manual gearbox option? It's suppose to be a sports car, automatic boxes are for GTs imo.

That looks nice, you can't beat the sound of a burbling V8 Jaguar. I'll be looking out for that on one of my frequent trips to our local Jaguar dealer.

Ive been told its initially pitched at the US Market & they arent clever enough to drive a manual.

If the cars a success which I think it will be wait for the coupe which will follow & then there may be some hyper versions to compete with Porsche etc & they may just get a proper box

Saw lots of adds for these in India, very nice.

Saw a Jag C-Type the other day. Absolutely gorgeous better than an E-type inho.

Saw the F type at the paris show last weekend, its absoluitekly stunning, far better than the pictures

If anyones into rag tops Goodwood Breakfast club this sunday is soft top sunday

Always makes me smile when Sports cars are shown and comments on Automatic gear changes & not Manual shifts are raised.

Especially since you have had for a long time now automatics that allow the driver to still do manual shifts.

If the 'Sports' bit means the need for pumping up and down your left leg for some exercise,

and using in conjunction with your left hand to change gear,

you might as well get a push bike and exercise both legs equally as you pump them up and down.

Thrill of the wind in your hair

& sweeping around those bends in total control & every fibre in your body alive.

& thats just on a old 7 gear one, imagine what it will be like with 28 gears.

You mean comments from people like pre-eminent motoring journalists? As happy as you evidently are with ya pair of flappy paddle boxes, doesn't mean it suits everyone; the fact you see lots of comments about autos alongside sports car discussions is quite telling. I've yet to sit in a car and think "what this needs is to be £1200 more expensive with a robot that presses the clutch for me".

Edit: Actually the Jag isn't even that, it's just a conventional auto with a torque converter. Not that it's necessarily bad thing versus a flappy paddle style one.

PMSL @ Pre-eminent & Motoring Journalists.

(preeminent = superior to, or notable above all others, outstanding.)

OK you win. Good points there. I forgot about buying the Robot,

or not if it is no more to buy with an autobox, maybe even cheaper.

Manuals = Driven by preeminent drivers!

george

PS, Conventional Autoboxes do also come with flappy paddles & also with Shifters with which you can choose your choosen gear that move with your left or right hand depending on what side of the car you sit in.

I never said anything about manuals being driven by better or pre-eminent drivers. But you might have a point, most people I know that drive an auto are pretty bad drivers (unfortunately I am related to quite a few of said people, hope it's not a genetic or nationality thing :-S ) My point was that many motoring journalists (from what I can tell a majority of them, but obviously that's just anecdotal rather than empirical evidence) seem to prefer normal manual boxes in sports cars, usually something along the lines of the automated manual box "works very well on the track, but around town is a bit jerky and sometimes doesn't follow instructions". And those are the sort of people that should know.

Also just because the auto box is standard equipment, doesn't mean you aren't paying extra for it; the 1.4 TSI is standard in the Fabia vRS, but I think Skoda do charge you extra for it over the 1.2 3 cylinder engine available on other Fabias, in the same way there is a premium included in the list price for the DSG box.

Yes I know, but the term "flappy paddle box" has come to mean automated manuals with conventional or dual clutches, to distinguish them from conventional autos with a torque converter. I do know Aston, Merc and Jag have been fitting boggo auto boxes with paddles behind the steering wheel for quite some time, amongst other manufacturers.

Nice rear, but why the Toyota Prius Headlights? :(

:o

I think I may have made a mess in my trousers

Excuse me...

It's a nice car but it's too heavy and with an auto only gearbox, it's really just a newer looking XK.

I was rather hoping it would move the 2 door, 2 seater mid priced soft top game along a bit, but maybe not this time.

Its stunning but its just another car i will never get to own. Bugger.

As for gearbox, manufacturers fit "flappy paddle" boxes as that is what the public demand. I understand the attraction of a manual but the reality of it is pure supply and demand. Porche sell far more PDK transmissions than manuals. The majority prefer flappy paddle boxes and that is the hard facts im afraid. Its too costly to produce two different versions when the majority want the auto. I think i would prefer a manual myself in a sporty car but i cant afford a sporty car like the F type and to be honest i still think it willl be superb with the auto box.

I think the auto box in the Jag is a torque convertor and not a twin clutch manual such as that used in the Boxster.

I want one - but only in coupé form

Eh i know that. My point was that autos are what the public want thats why less sports cars are coming with manuals. Auto = torque covertor or dual clutch.

Auto = torque covertor or dual clutch.

Or single clutch. Think Maserati/Ferrari CambioCorsa and Duo Select, BMW SMG etc

They put in a Gearbox to suit the type of engine and performance/power. 8 speed auto.

One that they thought might last & not kill the cars occupants.

Its 2012, you can hardly expect to meet emissions and the majority of customers with a 5 speed or even 6 speed manual & 488 bhp..

Even a 1390cc/178bhp with a 7 speed can be up to 7th gear at only 50 mph and getting a degree of economy.

Put 5 speed and 488 bhp in a manual and then drive UK national speed limits or US ones,

you night as well just leave it in top most of the time.

Take a manual one and get the gear changes in going up the box quick enough and not bog it down or just spin the wheels.

They are pants though. For some reason i still think of them as "robotised manuals" rather than autos despite me thinking a dual clutch is an auto, probably because they dont work in full auto mode very well.

What is it that they do not do very well in full auto mode?

Do they not change gear, or the wrong gear is choosen.? Or not the gear you would choose?

No comprehendy, must just be me.

You choose Automatic and the gears change, choose reverse gear and the car reverses. Just like its designed to.

They are jerky as hell when in auto mode. An auto should be smooth IMO. Jerky is fine when using the paddles and when pushing on but round town jerky changes are just annoying.
