Dual Domains for laptop users

Featured Replies

Hi

we have two sites one has a win 2k server SBS machine (creightons.local)

the other here is a NT 4.0 machine (potter_moore) this is the domian they use the most,

DNS config is set to automatic...only way i have found to connect to teh creightons domain is to change the IP address to a static IP of a machine on there network even tho there is DHCP enabled at both sites..

.this isnt ideal when the user is there on his/her own it woudl be better if i could configure the laptop winxp pro so they can select cerightons or potter_moore at log in depending on which site there at??

Cheers

Joel

OK the way we do it at work is to setup a trust relationship between the domains.

any more detail ?

thanks

OK mate tell you what if you pop round I can let you have a set of windows 2000 manuals for free. Basically IIRC you set the win2k domain in Mixed mode which allows you to connect to NT4 domains and setup trusts. It's been a while since I have done this though. Once connected you will have a drop down box on the windows login screen with both the domains listed.

I don't think you can set up domain trusts with SBS though.

Eh really ? I was under the impression you could with the entire server suite.

Nope , officially you can't do trusts on SBS as it's a restricted version of AD

There seems to be an unofficial way of doing it here http://fac.ce.vreau.eu.org/sbs.html but it sounds a bit risky

But it's not part of AD if you use it in MIXED mode though is it ? I would agree if Joel was running in NATIVE mode.

Mixed mode is still AD , just with limits imposed for backwards compatibility.

Also as SBS is designed to be the forest root and sole domain I *think* it can only run in native mode anyway.

Sorry Joel if this is true matey..

Dual boot machine?

crude but would work :)

thats the way i understood SBS is set up, it dont like any other domians, so trusts etc were tricky to setup, thats why i asked the question on the phone about 3 time Ivan :D;)

mmmm bugger, i could ditch the SBS box in favour of running everything from potter_moore on maybe a termial services machine with server 2003 on it.... mmmm i will find out a bit more about what exatcly my bosses want sharing across networks

EDIT: think it has something to do with the properties associated with the domian names every SBS server has a domainname.local but normal NT, 2k 2003 has just domianname no .local after it...
