1.6 Glxi

Featured Replies

Hello to all. I have followed this forum for around a month (I found the link at vwvortex) as a lurker. At first I followed just to gain information about tuning possibilities for the 1.9TDI and 1.8T RS engines as those were the two Octys I was about to purchase.

Alas, the only 1.9TDI available at my dealer is an automatic 88KW and my RS is still on order for arrival on the start of August. I still haven't given the deposit for the RS though, as here in Panama dealers really suffer from shaddy practices. I am however thinking about purchasing a 1.6GLXi Manual Ambiente instead of the 1.9TDI and started searching around this forum for performance bits.

The only things found were a 8hp chip, better flowing heads for a 22hp gain and camshafts. Problem is that I do not know what camshafts to get. I searched some websites on the tuner links but I'm confused as to if the engine shown as Volkswagen 16V 1.6 is actually the one in my future Octy. In other words, where can I get cams? Also where can I get a cold air induction kit made specially for the 1.6? Are their any headers for that engine? Underdrive Pulley kits? Throttle bodies? Should I give up?

Also does anyone know if their are Jabba dealers outside Europe? I'm very interested in chipping the RS when it gets here. Will Neuspeed accessories bolt up to the engine (like downpipe, intercooler pipe, etc)?

Thanks for the help in advanced and for the great forum. And if anyone is curious the RS will be Corrida Red while the 1.6 is diamond silver metallic.:D

1.6 - Talk to Erik@AAT for the tuning options on this engine, I'm sure he can help on this.

RS, yes they should bolt straight on although some bits may require a bit of "persuasion".

And welcome to the forum.

Jon

I don't believe Jabba have any dealer outside of Europe. However talking to Mike yesterday he said he has enough information to do an "off the shelf" chip although it's not really his scene (man:D ).

Jabba aren't actually doing one but if you ask nicely they might do a "special" for you.

The 1.6 in the Octavia is the 8v head?

1.6GLXi is pre-facelift, 1.6 Ambiente is post-facelift... :)

It's the VW 8 valve unit, which has been used in Golfs for a couple of decades now, so there should be some tuning options. Never found anything that improved performance that was cost-effective though, so I've never bothered...

Rob.

I imagine most of the mods for the 1.6 would probably be quite labour intensive (porting head, enlarging value set etc) hence the high cost/bhp gain ratio.

Thanks to everyone for their replies and welcome. I got confused on the models and the engine in the Octy is the 1.6 16V unit MPI. TaviaRS I checked out some past posts in this forum about Eric's work but I only found info in his site about tuning for the 1.4.

Wasn't aware they did the Octy 1.6 as 16V! But then, there's lots of things we don't get over here...

Rob this is the engine:

1.6 MPI/75KW, petrol, OHC, front/transverse mounted induction pipe with variable induction length.

Is it an 8 or 16 valve? Also have you made any mods to your engine?

What does 75kw equate to in bhp? If it's around the 100bhp mark then I'd say it the 8v head.

Originally this was fitted in the Polo saloon. I thought this strange at the time as there was alos the 1.4 16v producing 100bhp; suppose it was down to driving characteristics for each vehicle and their target customer.

The technical specification brochure confirms that it is an 8 valve engine. 75KW = 102hp.

75KWx1.356= 101.7hp. Thanks Skodi and DGW. Now can someone help me find some camshafts, cold air intake, headers, etc?

Has anyone used a Pipercross, Green or Jetex induction systems on the 1.6? Do they sell them in America? Also, what changes did Seat make to the 1.6 in the Arosa Racer to get 125hp?

We don't have the Arosa Racer here; I think the biggest engine is the 1.4 16v (for the Arosa that is).

However it sounds like the 1.6 16v engine in the VW Lupo GTI as that produces 125bhp.

Sorry apart from stating the obvous and saying it has a 16v head, I don't know anything else about this engine.

Thanks Skodi. Does anyone know if the 16V and 8V heads are interchangeable.

Sounds like it's the 8 valve.

I haven't made any mods to my engine, as to get any reasonable gain (+50bhp) would probably cost the same as the car. And if I could've afforded to pay double for my car, I'd have been able to get a vRS... :D

The 1.6 unit started life in the Mk1 Golf GTi - the subsequent versions of the GTi used a 1.8 and 2.0, which were just bored out 1.6s. So, if you want tuning parts, a good place to start could be Golf GTi speacialists who do stuff for the Mk1... :)

Thanks Rob! Is you car also silver?

Indeed it is...stays nice and clean looking... :)

Incidentally, having a browse for tuning parts, I came across this webpage, which has some performance options for various Gold GTI's - I'd imagine they fit, although I've never tried it... :D

I'd imagine you wouldn't see much more bhp for it, but the induction kit and hoses might help it stay more responsive for longer. The cams look interesting, but I don't know how much they would affect acceleration...

Anyone know what duration the existing 1.6 cams are? :D

Thanks Rob. I have found that VW used a 1.6 MPI 8V engine in their Mk3 Golf/Jetta/Ventos so that's why I took that engine as a starting point. I'll try to email Awesome but I just know any part they ship to me would kill me just on the sending costs alone.

Yeah, even the Mk4 Golf has the same 1.6 in it...but I'm not sure when the last GTi came with a 1.6 engine...

Shipping would be expensive from Awesome, but if they can give you an idea of what can and can't be done with the engine it could be useful. You might be surprised at the shipping costs though... :)

Rob.

Only the Mark1s come with the 1.6. The last mark1 GTIs had the 1.8; don't know the dates........some time in the 80s.

The MK1 was released in 1979 with the 1.6, and I think that was the only year where that was the only engine available. For some reason (as in I might have seen it somewhere), I thought the Mk2 was

available with a choice of 1.6 or 1.8...
