oil on top off spark plugs 1.6mpi

Featured Replies

hi there has any one with a 1.6mpi ever had oil on top of spark plugs and on HT leads engine has only done about 70k its not coming from any gaskets drinks oil too no need to change oil thats how bad it is i really don't want it to be piston rings as i mite as well scrap it as thats going way to far over my head

Make sure that the beather collector on the back of the block that goes to the inlet is not blocked and the pipe that connects to the inlet is free, not holed or collapsing with vacuum.

Is this oil mist on top of the engine, or oil on the plug nose insulators and electrodes?

Tell us about your engine mods, maintenance and driving style and we'll be able to tell you why you have to change (at least) the rings at 70k.

The main thing I get is some leakage from the rocker cover, which can coat the top end over a period of time. Unless it gets any worse it won't get fixed ;)

Depending on the composition of the rocker cover gasket, fixing it might just be as easy as doing up a bolt or 2 if this is the case.

Hi Ken, agreed I think it would be a relatively easy fix but it's one of those jobs I haven't got round to yet. Having now topped 100k I should expect a weep here and there ;)

So the oil is outside the engine. Ok, it's a mist, so proceed as per my last on checking rocker cover bolts are tight, and as others on cleaning the crankcase ventilation system.

Your description of the electrode condition sounds like carbon fouling. This is normally caused by an over-rich mixture, so start with a new air filter, and checking the voltage from the lambda sensor.

i have had a new air filter fitted and lambda as vag com gave me a fault code for the lambda there is no leakage from rocker cover as i scrubed engine when i was on the trolly waiting to go in car only leak i have is a water one on thromostat houseing to block got o ring to fix just a mission to fit as aircon heater box makes access hard

So you cleaned the engine, ran it, and then found oil on the plugs outside the engine. That rather says there there is an oil leak someplace.

no i have cleaned oil from them and it keeps coming back

FFS!!! IF YOU CLEAN THE OIL OFF AND IT KEEPS COMING BACK, THAT'S WHAT SHOWS THAT YOU HAVE A LEAK!
