Gearing change on the Fabia vRS

Featured Replies

I have heard that the gearing was shortened on the later Fabia vRS's

Can someone tell me by how much?

I read that 6th gear on the earlier ones 70mph = 2100 rpm

Has anyone driven both and noticed any difference?

It was 1900rpm on the early ones, 2100 on the newer ones IIRC.

I've got a September 2003 fabia vrs and bro in law has a spring 04 one and his 6th gear is useable much earlier than mine.

Mine's a '05 spec & 70mph in sixth is 2100rpm.

are we doing real 70mph or speedo ??

Speedo.

Ditto.

Would this matter as it is the final drive from the gearbox that gives you the speed surely  I know speedo's are out but it would be out the same across the fabia vRS range surely ?

FYI The '05 Ibiza FR appears to have the same short gearing. I measured both at 66mph/2000 rpm in top according to the speedo.

Do a search - there's a link to comprehensive excel charts showing the various gear ratios somewhere but I've not time to look at present.

Basically you can look at it as follows: 6th gear on the newer car is very close to 5th gear on the old one. Approx 32mph/1000rpm. The other ratios are then progressively squeezed together producing effectively a short ratio gearbox in "old speak"
