Is there any way of testing it?

Only if you have a fault code scanner or vcds.

Mine does this too. Ive had a new battery, replaced spark plugs and had a new fuel filter and neither of them has cured this problem

I also get slight hesitation when starting up first time in the day but usually after it hasn't been used most of the previous day. I drive mixed motorway/town and usually give it a good thrash on Esso V-Power when on the run and then I notice the day after it is not so bad. I've also dropped in 750ml of Slick 50 synthetic oil additive when my oil consumption drops to min and that also improves the engine somewhat in response and noise bizarrely.
