turbo cracks

Featured Replies

What r the problems with having cracks in the turbo? Surely the turbo gets so hot the casing expands and the crack seals prob solved, and can't see the casing blowing apart unless it cool down very fast and shatters(ie throwing cooled water over it lol)

Thought the metal and the cracks expand

Yes they do.

Once a crack starts, it will get bigger n bigger due to heating up and cooling and eventually pop.

If you look at the large one i mine i would say thats whats happening. Even tho for the last 2 years of her use she was just pootling up n down the motorway at 60 65. And on tickover for first and last 5 miles of all journeys its still got that gaping thing.

Mmm

ANYONE FITTED A TURBO TIMER SINCE THEY HAVE THIS PROBLEM??? i asked same question upon joining forum and may as well have said i'd just **** myself lol

if so how do you fit them ??? it easy

The oil pumped through the turbo only goes through the bearing and shaft cartridge between the two housings, it's not there to cool the housings just to cool and lubricate the bearings. The hot side heats up and cools naturally in the same way as the rest of the exhaust system does. So there must another reason for the cracks than you not letting the turbo cool properly.

It sounds like its a common problem on K03/K03S turbos going by the difficulty of getting a 2nd hand one thats not cracked. I'm wondering if its anything to do with the dreaded coil pack problem as that seemed to affect most 1.8T cars and would have caused unburnt fuel to be burnt within the exhaust manifold putting a lot more strain and heat through the turbo.
