Its all off.....Maybe

Featured Replies

Yes as much as I love the Yeti... Its all off for me unless I can get one for less than the price of a top spec Dacia Duster. SWMBO has told me to draw a line under the Yeti in favour of a Duster after she Saw one at the Motor show while away for the weekend.... I have to say I too was quite taken by it. It may be pig ugly but what you get for so little money is amazing.

We need arguments to stay with the Yeti. Hurry chaps she won't wait forever...... The Duster hits the streets soon, Yeti prices need to drop fast for us to get on the Snow Monster road again.

Dacia Duster - a what? :giggle:

It's made by Renault. Is that enough? ;)

The name is number 1 reason !!!!!!

Woman usually respond to money related gains, even though a Yeti will be more expensive now it will not lose 50% of what you have just spent by driving out of the dealership.

You will have strong residuals in the Yeti and the Dacia will be almost un sellable IMO.

Show her how bad the Duster performed in the N-Cap tests as compared to the Yeti, and then compare the fuel consumption figures, insurance costs and servicing costs.

Oh, and get her to test drive both vehicles to find out how big the Duster actually is.

I saw a lot of Dusters when I was in Germany a few weeks back, awful things. What I also saw were a LOT of fairly new ones on the forecourts which were used. They were very low priced which tells me that as James I mentioned, the values plummet faster tha a deceased ex Radio 1 DJ's reputation. A Yeti, conversely, holds it's value much better, performs much better, is better looking (imho) and is equipped with a better engine and drivetrain - it's VW underneath remember.

The Dacia will be worth less than half its price at best after 12 months...TELL HER THAT!!

What make of kitchen appliances does your wife have, Neff or Candy.

If she's happy with poor quality and un-reliable go with the Duster.

Its all in the name :-)

Look at the residual finance values. Overall a Dacia will cost you more to run over 3 years. Mind you the garage you will need to build to hide it behind your house will retain most of its value.

That's going to make used Dusters a pretty good bet I would have thought for anyone on a still smaller budget. Pick up a 1yo 4x4 with say 10K on the clock for £8-9K?

for those of us old enough to remember.................lada cossack

Im a Miele man myself but I that's digressing...

I actually quite like the simple look and functional feel of the Duster tbh. I see tons of them abroad, mainly in France and Germany. However, the interiors are pretty bad (but what do you expect for the money they ask though!) and the clincher for me for not ever being able to put my own money into one was the high number of broken down ones I saw on my last trip at the roadside and at the services. Not good.

Thought they were still building them :wonder:

Back to topic; also seen plenty of these Dusters but while on a training course with students in Belgium a couple of years back. Look OK'ish but it depends on taste.

Re affording a Yeti then that depends what model your after and mileage your prepared to accept, as to whether a Yeti is in your budget; however as others have stated the Skoda is far safer in terms of accident survival and financial prosperity.

Examples;

MY 11 10 plate (single exhaust)

For 1k more a 2011 60 plate with low miles

If it's 4x4 then out of warranty with 60k on the clock but a very good price and plenty of life left in her

I saw a few in Germany and thought they looked ok. How anyone can say the Yeti is a good looker is beyond me and I'm thinking of buying one. A good car, definitely, good looker, definitely not.

The Duster interior does lets it down but the UK version is supposed to get an upgrade.

I read somewhere that the Duster came second behind Audi in a German reliability survey based on warranty work.

You guys seem to forget the stick Skoda used to get. I had one of the very first fabias and it was a pile of s**te. Never out of the garage. Gave up after a year and sold it.Didn't put me off the brand though and returned a few years later.

I think the Duster will be worrying a good few SUV manufacturers.

Just had a go on the Duster online configurator, £18,000 for a top of the range 4x4,and still not as good spec as a Yeti, No thanks.

But it's a Dacia, really?

Just make her watch the Top Gear Yeti show.

Dacia? No thanks. Not even if it was better specced and cheaper.

Plus, you say your seeing lots of them, another reason to avoid IMO.

The Dacia would make a cracking second hand purchase, but a brand new one? no thanks.

If you can't get your wife to change her mind you could always plumb for the mid-range Dacia 'Dishcloth' or top of the range 'Ovenpad' when released next year.

Do you really want to drive around in something named after the contents of the cupboard under the sink? :-)

If your car buying decision is based on cost then I'd avoid anything new and buy a four or five year old car. (or older!)

Preferably something that depreciated fast. You should not even be looking at new cars.

The Yeti is better than the Duster in a lot of ways. That's why it's more expensive.

Look at it this way.

If you put your family in a Duster and have a crash and someone gets hurt badly will you be able to get that back by buying a better car next time with more safety features and a better design?

My guess is no. You pay your money and make your choice. Cheap cars are cheap for a reason.

Lets look at the figures...

N cap

Adult: Yeti (92%) Duster (74%)

Child: Yeti (78%) Duster (78%)

Pedestrian: Yeti (46%) Duster (28%)

Safety Assist: Yeti (71%) Duster (29%) - the thing that helps you not have an accident in the first place!

So if the person in question chooses cost over safety, design, driviability and residual values I'd say buy a cheaper car.

An old one that's better than a Duster!!!

You could just but a used Yeti. Plenty of reasonable ones about too

Just tell her that you are going to get a Yeti........end of

There's a thread going in Off Topic Chat asking if anyone else has a ban. :giggle:

Depreciation should be enough to put you off the dudter.

Oh and the Lada Cossack was/is pretty decent and a fairly capable 4x4.

Niva's are very capable off-road, but are noisy, uncomfortable, thirsty, cramped and generally not very pleasant the rest of the time.
