Tailgaitors, and general bad drivers

How stupid!!

And what happens if the person behind isn't that aware?

I just lift off the throttle personally. That way they can't shunt me too hard and surely they would be at fault if they did shunt? Thy way I shouldn't really get hurt, but their wallet might.

I just don't see how they don't get the message of "back off else I'll hold you up longer". Someone mentioned that what I they are genuinely in a rush, but one can still average a high speed without getting up peoples backsides. In the case of lady in labour is it worth risking the lives of mother and baby by tailgating? It really doesn't get you anywhere quicker than giving a bit of room and speeding up when the road ahead is clearer.

  • LoL. Yeah when they invent a camera otherwise plod will stick to hiding behind bushes on long straights.

With bikes when I see them coming I tap the left indicator and move over. I thought this was quite a good thing to do and ever biker I've let past like this have flashed hazards as a thank you.

Imvho, just re-adjusting position to the nearside will do the trick and using the indicator isn't really necessary. Also works well if you're in the (relatively rare!) situation where you're trying to encourage someone in a car following behind you that there is an opportunity to overtake by improving their view of the road ahead without them having to move....

I don't always do that (look, when the lane's only 2.7m wide there's not much spare); what I do to signal a biker that I'm aware of them is lift my left hand into the "I wish to go straight ahead" signal for persons directing traffic.

As a biker id rather the car indicated rather than a hand geture. It clearly shows he has seen me and is aware of what i want to do and in turn gives me confidence that it is safe to pass. A hand gesture just isnt as clear IMO, he / she may be having a converstaion with a passenger and the hand gesture is merely part of emphsising part of whats being discussed. Indicators generally mean one thing = im going this way or that way. Simples.

An indicator could also mean "I am about to brake in the carriageway" or "I am about to turn left". The arm gesture (remember that I will be moving my arm and holding it in position for 'several' {how long will vary with circumstances, but I'll not be doing it on a twisty bit anyway} seconds) can only sensibly be interpreted as "I intend to proceed straight ahead". The most you can do with the information beyond that is presume that I will check my mirrors regularly.

If I want to let you overtake in a queue I'll use road position, possibly re-inforced by indicators and a dab of brake, when there's a clear chance.

I find this helps a lot:

Scares them right off. If they still insist on being so dangerous, then slow down to increase your stopping distance then move over and let them past when it is safe to do so.

I initially only put this in my rear window as an experiment to see what it would do to tailgaters...it was enough to make me keep it there. Plus, it will make crash for cashers think twice.

I hate tailgaters I always do the 2 second rule, they still tailgate in terrible weather and I'm going to use the rear wiper method lol

A useful modification on have a 4 second "bubble" - preferably 2 in front and two behind, but if you have a car tailgating open the front gap up to 4 seconds- this allows you to slow down slower in an emergency and so reduces the chances of being rear ended.

Unfortunately if people are stupid enough to tailgate they will likely not understand the significance of the sticker

It works though, as soon as they see they will back off completely.

And there is a chance that he had a genuine reason for driving like he did. When my second child was born every thing happened very quickly and we had to make a mad (headlights and horns) dash 20 miles to the maternity hospital - son was born in the car park.

With all due respect, There is no genuine reason for anybody to be driving like that IMO, excluding emergency services which to be fair you should have been phoning rather that making a "headlights and horns dash 20 miles" IMO ofcourse...

The emergency services are trained extensively to do that sort of thing...

To the OP: let him make the unsafe undertake, just make sure he can't pull out in front of you, you'll often find the person behind you won't let them in either.. ;)

I understand your view and you are quite entitled to it. There are very few circumstances where such action is (in my opinion) justified. On this occasions I had called the emergency services (twice) but we lived in a remote rural area and on the second occasion I was told that it would be a further 30 mins until an ambulance was available and I was advise that "I may wish to make my own way).

Can you honestly say that in similar circumstances or if you got a call saying a loved ne had been in an accident you would not do the same?

Fair enough in that situation I can see your justification, you can see where my assumption came in :)

Unfortunately I have had that phone call and had to make my way across the country at the request of the police...

Personally I struggled to drive as "angry" as maybe I could have due to the nature of the call...

I doubt its the sticker that is making them back off, its hard enough to read in this picture let alone from behind the wheel of a following car...

I would rather see an indicator myself rather than a hand gesture inside a car as an indicator is more obvious. Just my opinion but i have been riding bikes for over 18 years.

I would guess it depends on how close they get

So many morons on the road. The vast majority of us are merely trying to get from A to B, but we at least put some thought into how we're driving.

Today I had some muppet in an R reg 323i try to undertake me, twice. I gave it the beans and held him out effortlessly both times and then moved over when safe and convenient to do so and he just sped off. No idea what he was trying to prove, later I overtook him in a 50 average speed camera area?!?

A lifetime ago, mum had a Hilman Hunter, with the reverse lights on a switch.

Just a quick touch......... ;) ;)

I got gesticulated at today was like he was shaking the coffee beans, one can only assume he knew me my crime? I failed to notice he had got himself into the wrong lane and was trying to manuver back into my lane, to be fair i would have let him in if i had seen him....

I just had some chavs in a Corsa around an hour or so ago crawling all over my tail (doing slightly over 30 in a 30 zone). They won't have seen me through my tints but I could see them and he was actively seeing how close to my tail he could get. Quick blip of brake lights did nothing so come the next green light I set off nice'n'slow then gave it the beans. Not seen him since :D

Watched a young woman pull out in front of my bus in her old fiesta, then proceed to tailgate a car by literally inches down a 60mph road. All while she had a child in the back and a baby seat in the front. Lovely.

Last night I had another young woman arrive at a mini roundabout and pull straight out in front of me. She looked and just pulled straight out.
