Fitting big brakes under a wheel

Featured Replies

Folks I know that the R32/S3/NQSBBK stuff won't fit properly under a Neptune and was also to believe they wouldn't fit under the Interlagos wheels I bought (without spacers), but if a BBK fits under a particular wheel of one car, it ought to fit under the same wheel on another car built on the same platform?

I am asking as I know the NQSBBK goes under a TD Pro Race 1.2 ET45 8Jx18 on a Leon with clearance to spare, but I wanted to know if this was to do with the set up on the Leon or if it ought therefore to work on the Octavia?

The Pro Race 1.2 is known for having good spoke clearance at the back of the wheel, so I'd say the same would be true of fitment to the Octy2 with the NQSBBK. ET45 will also help the cause :)

Great news cheers.

Not wanting to come across as a thread hijacker but... based on the above statement by Wardy... does this mean that a NQSBBK utilising 330mm disks *should* fit under OE 17" 7J Yeti alloys with an ET45 offset?

Ive been led to believe that an ET of 45 isnt great and something like an ET28 Audi alloy would provide much more clearance?

john - yes, I think you're right - leon and octavia share the same basic suspension components so if a particular brake/wheel combo works on the leon it should also fit fine on the octy.

pro race 1.2's are good value for money - 9kg each IIRC. personally I don't like the look but in terms of function/value they're great.

Issue could be the alloy width there Lee, as they're a 7J. Don't know much about performance bits on a Yeti I'm afraid :)

Physically there is room within a 17" wheel for a 330mm disc, but as we know that doesn't always tell the whole story....

same setup, will fit the same :-)

I'm kind of the same but i) 9kg ii) price - they're hard to knock for the money. I toyed with the VZ033 but there is some opinion that these look a little small for the Mk2 and are gravity cast so I assume they will be a little heavier and probably not as strong as the TDs.

So out of interest then, the set up on the Scirocco and the Octavia, etc is the same or is it different?

The Scirocco's' wheels are 18x8 ET41, but I was to believe the design meant they didn't have sufficient clearance.

Basic setup is the same, but clearly with more 'stylised' products from the VAG stable, they tweak things. So to fit in with the bodyshell design on the Rocco, they've pushed the wheels out further into the arches, hence the lower ET and stance will be improved by the wider wheel. Presume you mean the Interlagos wheel, at that width and offset?

Depends what you mean by 'sufficient clearance'. In terms of brake caliper clearance at the rear of the wheel? Again, depending on the brake kit fitted and the caliper size and design, with a wheel lacking sufficient rear spoke clearance you'll have a problem.

On a NQSBBK you might be OK

6-pot Brembos required 3mm spacers to clear

Yeah it was an Interlagos - if I had fitted those onto the Octavia, with the wheels pushed out to the arches I would have likely have been able to fit over Porsche 4 pots? I asked the question on Scirocco Central or whatever it's called and was told they needed to be spaced, but I guess the question was only really appropriate to the Scirocco. Tbh I thought the set up would be the same.

Again, it will depend on clearance from the rear of the spokes. You can't simply look at wheel width and offset.
