headlamp relay?

Featured Replies

hi all, i have a 2003 octy elegance 1.9tdi..-

a few weeks ago, during driving in the night, i used main beam and when i switched back to dipped the lights went off for a split second.. (side's stayed on, but no dipped- i thought i had imagined it..)

last week, it did it again- but much, much longer this time- i had to use front fogs to get me home (the local plod love this kinda thing round here :( )

anyway now- no dipped beam whatsoever.. side lights/ nothing/main.. :(

my initial thoughts were dodgy switch- i changed that last week- but its still doing it.. :(

my next thought is a knackered headlamp relay- although any idea which one it is? - im guessing its one of the many down in the drivers kick panel.. but which one?

any help/pointers would be greatly appreciated, as i cant really drive the car in the dark as it is :(

cheers, steve

The mk1 octavia doesn't have a headlamp relay. Itt sounds like it might be the switch or a brokeneh wirewire somewhere.

Stupid phone grrr!

thats not good news :( ive already changed the switch with no real difference :( looks like im trying to find a wiring diagram now..

does anybody have a wiring diagram for the headlamp switch they can post up?

When you say you changed the switch, do mean the stalk on the steering column?

no- i mean the actual light switch.. from what i can see- the feed to the dipped beam is the yellow/red wire from pin4 on the plug or pin 56 on switch.. this yellow red wire then disappears into the loom up under the dashboard and then appears out of the loom at the n/s headlamp as a yellow/black wire?

question is- is there a junction/ connection where the yellow/red becomes yellow/black?

i can see me bypassing the whole lot and putting a feed directly from pin 4 to the n/s yellow/black..

It's the LH stalk that is faulty.

The yellow/black wire goes to the fusebox.

On the other side of the fuse it is yellow/green and goes to the stalk.

The feed to the headlight main/dip switch on the stalk is yellow/red.

am i right in thinking that fuses 20 and 21 are for dipped beam?- if so these must take a feed from yellow/red pin4/56?

i'll go and check this now- cheers :)

Fuses are...

18 - RH main

19 - RH main

20 - RH dipped

21 - RH dipped

Time for a CC upgrade :-)

cc upgrade?- whats that?

big thanks to rwbaldwin :) - looks like you were right about the stalk- unplugged and replugged the multiplug on the back and everythings back to normal.. :) although i doubt if im lucky enough for it just to be a bad connection, so better start thinking about replacing the stalk.. does the steering wheel have to be removed to replace the stalk? :(

cruise control..

is it that simple? just a different stalk?

A different stalk and a single loom.

It is a mod, so you should inform your insurance company. They are likely to look for undeclared CC if you rear-ended someone. It's probably worth asking 'how much to add the cruise control option' (don't say mod) before you do it.

does the steering wheel have to be removed to replace the stalk? :(

Yep, so you need to take care with the airbag, and remember to punch mark an indicator thing (all becomes clear if you search) to show the number of times the steering wheel has been removed.

You have PM

It happened again and call breakdown out they replace fuse. Now failed MOT for no dip beam. The garage are saying a body control module I've been told my car does not have that and I have been told it could be a relay. Any one help please
